Question 3: What have you learnt about your audience feedback?

Over the course of creating my digipak, advert and music video, I have repeatedly been asking my
target audience for their views and opinions with their regards to the three main tasks. Target audi-
ence feedback has played a vital role in the process of the outcome of the two ancillary tasks and
the music video. The purpose of the feedback is to see whether the audience were amazed and
drawn into my products or if they had felt the complete opposite. My first blog post regarding my
target audience was a post introducing who my products are aimed at and why.

I collectively decided that my music video, digipak and advert should be aimed at girls who are be-
tween the age range 12-24 as this age group have a typical interest in the music genre pop and
have also grown up with the use of technology which would be a bonus point as they would know
how to use the internet to navigate my music video. At the start of my blogging process and up-
dates, I created a questionnaire regarding my chosen song. I wanted my class peers to give me
feedback on their views and opinions on the song choice. The feedback that they had given me
was extremely positive and helpful as it was good and most important to know whether my audi-
ence like the song choice and their ideas as to what features could possibly be added within the
video. The feedback that I received regarding consisted of adding bright coloured lights as these
are usually added in a pop music video due to the use of bright colours. Feedback also included
using a couple to show how they have fallen in love over a period of time. I took this feedback and
started to plan my video. Below is an example of feedback that I received from my class peer.

At the same time of planning my video, I also started to plan my digipak. I started by creating a
digipak questionnaire consisting of 12 questions. These questions link to my thoughts and ideas
regarding the front cover, inside left and inside right, back cover, title, font, track numbers, album
name, colour scheme and additional features. The feedback that I received from this questionnaire
was very positive as my target audience was very supportive and helpful as they told me what I
wanted to hear. Questionnaires have been helpful and tactical during the planning side of my
products as it is always good to find out what your target audience think and if they are supporting
the ideas that you have. However, not everyone agreed with each other as some had decided that
they wanted the album to be called 1998 yet others decided that it should be called 18. Some other
members decided that the title of the album as it reminded them of Adele and her slow songs
rather than upbeat pop songs. Below is the template of questions that I had asked.
As I had completed the first draft of my music video, I reached out to my target audience asking for
their feedback and views. I collectively asked them as to how they felt about the video, whether
they liked it or not and if anything needed improving or adding. My aim was to treat this as a focus
group even though I did not realise that the camera was not filming when asking for their opinions.
However during this time, I noted down what they were saying that needed improving and how it
could be improved. The majority of those that I asked said that the video was going along the right
track as it is easily identified that the video shows a young girl falling in love with a young boy.

My next set of audience feedback was regarding the font that I was going to use on my digipak and
A4 advertisement. I asked my two groups of friends on my group chats on WhatsApp. I sent them
a text along with the screenshot of three fonts asking them to pick a font that stands out and is
suitable for the album.
The results consisted of everyone agreeing choosing the first font over the other two fonts. This is
because they believed that the font looks like a signature as it is fancy and curly. There was no
negative comments as to the response of my fonts as everyone was impressed with the choice of
my fonts. By this point, I had finished the construction of my second draft of my music video. I yet
again used the well-known social media app WhatsApp as it allows me to reach out to all of the
contacts on my phone. I asked my group chat that has 15 girls aged 17-18 for their opinions on the
second draft. I sent a long message to this group asking what they liked about it, does the song
correspond to the video and does anything need to be added or removed. I then followed the mes-
sage with a link to my YouTube channel so it made it easier for them to find the video rather than
them having to search for it themselves.

Their replies were very critical which helped me to have a bigger view on the editing side of the
video. The comments were very positive as they stated that the song does in fact fit with the video
which was my main aim for the outcome as my video is a narrative based video that tells the story
of a couple falling in love. The only negative comment was about the repetition of some of the
scenes. Whilst editing the video, I thought that the repetition of the scenes fitted with the theme of
my video however, i decided to act upon these opinions and have added new scenes to replace
the repeated scenes. This shows that I do respond to my target audiences feedback as their opin-
ions mean a lot. I then asked some friends on Imessage about their opinions on the video. They
were yet again very helpful and engaging ad they gave me the feedback that I wanted. One stated
that some of the clips in the diner were shaky and unsteady so I have decided to act on this and
remove the unsteady scene as it makes the video look unprofessional . The target audience that I
have received up until now regarding my digipak, poster and music video has been very critical
and helpful. It has also shown that my target audience are engaged and pleased with the outcome
and do actually like the video which is good to know.

After completing my construction of my digipak and A4 advertisement, I sent the products out to
my audience to hear their thoughts and opinions. To reach out to my target audience, I used the
social media sites such as WhatsApp, Imessage, Twitter and Instagram. This is because these
apps are the most used apps to date. The overall feedback was very positive as they liked the out-
come and the mystery about the women on the front cover. This was a risk that I was willing to take
as I was nervous that my audience would not understand the idea behind it. After taking note from
the opinions from my audience, I decided to act upon their opinions and change what needs to be
changed. This is what the inside left and inside right looked like before I made any changes.

The negative feedback stated that the inside left and inside right was too bright which made the
lyrics of the song less easy to read, making it difficult to work out the lyrics of the song. Once I had
made these small changes, I then uploaded a blog post called Changes to digipak and then sent
images of the newly updated digipaks to my target audience asking if they preferred the new out-
come. These are the changes that I had made.
To make the background of the inside left and inside right lighter. I used Photoshop to do this. I
clicked on the layer that is connected to the image and changed the opacity levels and changed
the effect to hard mix to make it lighter allowing the audience to see what the lyrics so they can
join in on a sing along.

My target audience collectively agreed that they preferred the lighter shaded colours for the left
and right inside covers as they make it easier for them to read the lyrics. However, one of my tar-
get audience members said that the different sized fonts on the back cover looked strange yet I
have decided that the different sized fonts look unique and different so i am not changing it. After
completing my digipak i decided to make minor changes on my poster as there was no social me-
dia links on the poster so I added a Facebook and Twitter account on the poster.
Once finishing my digipak and poster construction, I based all of my time getting my music video
finished. I had completed my third draft and yet again went to my target audience to seek advice
and their opinions. For this feedback, I decided that I wanted the audience to write down what they
think of the video and if anything needed improving. They stated that they liked how some of the
scenes are slowed down as it makes the video look more romantic.

However, some stated how some more shots should be slowed down like the last shot to empha-
sis the build up of the kiss. I then started to edit these scenes to show that I am engaging with my
target audience and that i listen to them.

Once the fourth and final draft had been completed, I yet again set out to ask my target audience.
The feedback that received was very positive and well-written. Everyone who responded said that
this is the most edited and constructed video over the process of creating my video. I asked my
target audience four questions relating to this final outcome; 1. From the other three drafts of my
music video, would you say this is the most developed and edited version? (If yes, why?) 2. Could
anything be added or removed to this draft? 3. Do you understand what is happening in the video
and why the artist is filming it herself? and 4. What is your overall opinion on this draft? One of the
biggest questions was whether they understood what was happening in the video and if they knew
what the message was behind the video. Everyone agreed that they knew what was happening
which was nice to know as it shows that I achieved my aim and goals of expressing this narrative
view of love.
The comments from my target audience had changed the way that I am going to work in the future.
This is because it is clear as to how important audience feedback is as the products that you are
making are being advertised and published to your chosen audience and they are the buyers.
Without their opinions, I would not have been able to work in a sufficient way as their feedback was
a guideline for making my three products better as the project went on. The comments that I re-
ceived taught me that the process of producing and editing a music video are very important as it
shows that you need to keep on top of asking for none stop feedback from your target audience.
