1.0 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Minimum flow valve have the same potential danger as pressure vessels. Therefore
planning, installation, operation and maintenance shall be done according the necessary
safety precautions.

1.1 PRECAUTION TO PERSONS AND MATERIALS

The minimum flow valves should only be operated within the limits of the conditions
provided HBE for design.

No changes are to be made without HBE approval.

Always use original spare parts. Site safety regulations and installation safety precautions
must be followed.

Please follow the instructions as given in the following Installation, Maintenance, and
operations instructions.

1.2 AVOID DANGER

Maintenance of the Automatic Recirculation Valve shall only be done by trained

personnel.

Before disassembly, the installation has to be shut down, the pressure relieved, and
cooled to ambient temperature. Make sure these safety precautions can only be cancelled
after the assembly of the valve.

Please be aware that liquid might be trapped in the valve after it is relieved of pressure.

Wear eye protection and protective clothing.

2. GENERAL INFORMATION

The HBE Automatic Recirculating Series HPM is used in centrifugal pump systems to
provide an automatic minimum flow under low load conditions.

The application range of the series HPM with a mutistage pressure let-down section is
dependent of the temperature for operating pressures up to 3500 PSIG. The valve consists
of an upper housing and lower housing, each provided with a flange. The bypass housing
and as an option the start-up housing are located horizontally at the side of the valve.
The valve trim comprises a check valve and a pressure reducing section.

The valve protects centrifugal pumps against overheating by maintaining a minimum

flow. At flows lower that the required minimum flow the check valve activates bypass
flow by means of a lever and vortex plug. When lifted off its seat the vortex plug allows
flow through the pressure reduction section to the return vessel.

The opening characteristic is linear, the bypass flow increases when the check valve
moves from its switch point further into the closed position. The design of modulation
bypass control, results in the total process flow and minimum flow remains contant, and
equals or exceeds the specified minimum flow at all times of operation.

The check valve is designed for the specific conditions and is spring loaded. The check
valves dampens pulsations because of its modulating effect on the main flow and
stabilizes unstable pump characteristics in the low load range.

The body housing is made from forged steel and is provided with a stainless steel liner in
the check valve area. All moving parts and guides are stainless steel which are
compatible. Alternative materials are available as options.

3. PACKING AND MARKING

The Automatic Recirculation Valve is shipped depending on size on a skid or a wooden

crate. The standard factory conservation is sufficient to protect the valve for a period of
approximately 6 months. The holding area should be dry and ventilated. Special packing
is available and quoted on application. Valve data is indicated on the valve nameplate as
per the below example. The valve nameplate is attached to each valve body.

For spare parts needs the following information should be provided with the inquiry or
order. Order number U----, valve model number and part number from parts list in HPM
Brochure and order data package.

3
4. INSTALLATION

The Automatic Recirculation Valve type HPM is normally installed with the main Flow
vertical. Horizontal installation is acceptable but needs to be specified when ordered. If
the main flow direction needs to be changed contact HBE for instructions before
installation. The bypass housing is connected to the bypass piping and the piping to the
return tank Review the recommended piping illustrations at the end of this Manual. Pay
attention to and follow the 12" bypass pipe spool recommendation. The pipe spool
will allow inline maintenance of the bypass assembly.

In order to prevent damage to the flange finish and gaskets the complete valve should be
installed in the piping free of stress. Before installation ensure that the machined flange
surfaces and gaskets are clean.

5.0 ASSEMBLY AND DISASSEMBLY

5.1 DISASSEMBLY OF THE HPM

Remove the HPM from the piping system. Disassemble bypass housing Pos. 09. Pull the
bypass trim out of the assembly, apply a screwdriver between the collar of the control
head (Pos.11) and the valve body (Pos.01). Remove the upper body (Pos. 02) from the
lower body (Pos. 01) by loosening the hexagon nuts (Pos. 28). The check valve (Pos. 07)
and spring (Pos. 06) can now be removed from the lower body (Pos. 01). Clean all parts
and check for any damage. If the seats are damaged (check valve seat or bypass seat),
they might be repaired by lapping the respective parts on the seats. Replace o-ring (Pos.
30).

5.2 ASSEMBLY OF THE HPM

Replace the check valve (Pos.07) with the spring(Pos.06) in the lower body(Pos.01).
Now the upper body (Pos.02) is placed on the lower body (Pos.01) and the hexagon nuts
(Pos.28) are tightened (check cross sectional drawing!) Carefully insert the bypass
section in the valve body and be certain that lever (Pos.13) fits (slides in the slot in the
check valve (Pos.07). The bypass housing (Pos.09) with the bypass orifice (Pos.23) is
now carefully replaced and tightened to the housing (Pos.01) with the hexagon nuts
(Pos.29)

5.3 DISASSEMBLY OF THE BYPASS SECTION

Occasionally, a complete disassembly of the bypass trim may be required. At each

inspection the bypass should be checked for proper operation. In case of damage, the
bypass section should be removed, disassembled and the damaged parts replaced.

INSPECTION

Check the seating of the vortex plug (Pos.12) and the vortex housing (Pos.10) for any
damage. Minor wear can often be corrected by lapping the plug and housing.

When found to be unrepairable by lapping the vortex plug and vortex housing should be
replaced as a unit.

Check glyd-rings Pos. 33.1, 34.1, and 35.1 for any damages.

Check the flow straightener Pos.23 for any damage. Replace all seals.

5
5.4 ASSEMBLY OF THE BYPASS SECTIONS
Proceed in the reverse order as per disassembly instruction above.

6
6. START UP TESTING OF THE HPM

The valve is tested with the pump being protected. Close the main isolation valve in the
pump discharge piping. Start the pump and the specified bypass flow will through the
bypass section. By closing or opening the main isolation valve, the opening and closing
operation of the bypass can be checked. The switch point of the valve can be established
acoustically (use a stethoscope or even a screwdriver to the ear will work.). In case start-
up internals are provided in the valve, the minimum flow is achieved through this section.
The automatic bypass assembly is shipped as a separate item and is installed after start up
operations are finished. The automatic bypass section is saved from damage during start
up, due to extended operating time in bypass, and debris.

7. MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

We recommend the bypass section of the valve be removed and inspected after the first
year of service. Seals should be replaced during the inspection process. Depending upon
the findings from the first inspection a schedule can be established. It is recommended
that valves which cycle in and out of bypass frequently such as in peaking power
generating plants schemes should be inspected and reconditioned on a yearly cycle.
Valves in a base load operation which seldom operate in bypass require minimal
maintenance.

Experience indicates the bypass should be inspected and repaired after 1500 hours of
bypass flow operation.

8. WARRANTY CONDITIONS

The standard warranty is 12 months of operation. The warranty does not include damage
caused by improper handling, debris in the system or normal wear.

7
9.0 INSTRUCTIONS IN CASE OF DAMAGE OR FAILURE

In order to judge the failure and cause, the following information is required:

A) The order number of the valve (U----). This number is stamped on each valve
body and the valve tag.

B) Valve model number and size: such as 6" - 1500 LB. HPM-24-150.

C) A description of the system in which the valve is installed and operating

conditions.
