Trott is the horticulture educator for Douglas County Extension
and has been involved in the floriculture and education industry for
the past 15 years. She also has experience growing produce for her
community and growing flowers on her farm, Prairie Garden Farm,
which she and her husband, Doug, have run for the past eight years.
She explained that the process of testing soil is relatively simple;
gardeners can visit a local Extension office to pick up soil testing
information or go onto the U of M website to learn how to mail in a soil
sample.
Soil testing is one of the most important steps to start the gardening
process, Trott said. After the soil is tested, it is important to shop
for disease resistant products to help prevent insect infestation and the
growth of fungi, which can cause bacteria diseases and viruses.
Not taking the proper precautions for soil health can be detrimental.
Local nurseries have a wide variety of disease resistant products available
to help prevent soil problems.
The main causes of damage to gardens are fungal diseases, Trott
said. It wreaks havoc in the garden and it can be very frustrating, but if the
right precautions are taken, it can be easier to manage or even prevent.
One of the most challenging parts about Trotts job is trying to inform
gardeners, who may already have a preconceived notion of what is wrong.
It can be a roadblock if someone has researched online and thought
they found the problem, Trott said. There is a wealth of information
online, but asking the experienced gardeners is more beneficial.
Trott discussed an overview of scenarios, how to prevent and how to
spot problems, and how to fix them, while Berlin educated the gardeners on
plant choice and placement.
Too many times people buy plants without researching their right
thriving conditions. I find myself being the voice of the plant, Berlin said.
Its better to do a little digging and homework before gardeners purchase
any kind of plant. Whether the plant thrives or not will depend on the soil and
lighting.

Berlin is the horticulture educator for Stearns, Benton
and Morrison Counties.
Her masters in horticulture and her experience in
her and her brothers landscaping business, Eagles
View Landscaping, provide Berlin with an advantage for
deciding what is the best plant for each persons land.
The state of Minnesota is continuing to see an
increase in insect disease, which can be elevated by the
number of sick plants, Berlin said. If gardeners do their
homework before hand, it could not only save their plants,
and a headache, but also help reduce the number of insects.
Berlin and Trott are looking forward to the summer,
because of the sunshine and warm weather. Before summer
approaches, they have advice for spring gardeners.
Spring can be a beautiful time of year because
everything is melting, but it is important to remember that we
live in Minnesota, Trott said. There will more than likely
be a frost, so it is important to delay trimming and to wait for
planting.
Berlin agreed.
The ground is still frozen and cold in spots, while others
are thawing and muddy, she said. Its hard to decide when to
plant, but using valuable resources comes in handy.
Both of the women enjoy their occupation and being able
to inform other gardens about diseases, soil testing and pointers
on how to grow vegetation.
Anyone can do it with a little effort, Berlin said.
Trott agreed.
Gardening is magic, she said. It is always changing.

by LAURA HINTZEN - Craig Messer
Staff Writer

Since 2008, Craig Messer of Sauk Centre has been working

as a salesman at Alex Brick & Stone in Alexandria. With 9 years
experience in the field, Messer has plenty of tips for those looking to
add or enhance a fireplace in their home.
When looking for a fireplace that is both
durable and high quality, Messer suggests
stopping into locally-owned businesses
instead of big box stores. While the prices
may be higher, the quality is likely to be
greater.
A big difference will be in installation
and service. Local businesses will offer
factory-trained installation and service
technicians where the big box stores dont.

If searching specifically for a gas fireplace

After picking out a fireplace, there are many
