METHODS

50 grams of rock salt or sea salt was weighed in a beaker. 200 mL of distilled

water was added into the salt. It was mixed well until no salt crystalline was visible. 2

parts of 25 mL each of the brine was weighed. Na 2CO3 was dispensed into a 25 mL

portion of a solution using a burette. The volume was recorded when a precipitate has

formed. NaOH was dispensed into another 25 mL portion of a solution using a burette.

The volume was recorded when the precipitate has formed. NaOH and Na 2CO3 was

added into the remaining brine by ratio and proportion. The brine reacted with caustic

soda and soda ash was centrifuged. The liquid part was collected then the total volume of

the pure brine was recorded. The contents were poured into an Erlenmeyer flask and

boiling chips was added. A stopper with a thermometer was attached into the Erlenmeyer

flask. The Erlenmeyer flask was set up over a hot plate. The temperature was recorded

and pressure was applied every 2 minutes. The slurry formed was collected and its weight

was obtained. The slurry was transferred into a pan and was air dried for about 2 days.

The refined pulverized salt was then weighed.
