Lesson Content
What Standards (national

or state) relate to this MAFS.2.MD.1.2- Describe the inverse relationship between the size of a unit and number

lesson? of units needed to measure a given object.

Essential Understanding

How to estimate the length of an object using nonstandard forms of measurement.

The same object can have different lengths based on the form of measurement being

used.

Objectives- What are you

teaching? Students will be able to:

Measure objects using a nonstandard measurement tool.

Collect measurement data on a given chart.
Recognize how lengths change based on different units of measure in an exit

ticket.

Rationale

These objectives are aligned with the standards for the beginning of this unit. Each

student will need to understand how to measure using various units (inches, centimeters,

feet, etc.). They will need to know how each unit is related and how they change the

length of the object. This lesson is an introduction to the chapter and it gives the learner

an opportunity to practice measuring objects using their own classroom.

The lesson will start as a whole-group lecture, and then it moves on to independent study

around the classroom. We will then come back together and reflect on what we have

learned. This lesson will provide time for the students to be hands-on in their learning

while also discovering connections between units of measurement. It is important they

learn this concept because they will need the knowledge gathered in this lesson to move

on in the next lesson.

Evaluation Plan- How will

you know students have Formative evidence: The teacher will observe and assess each student while they

mastered your objectives? measure objects in the classroom. The teacher will ask important questions and assess

students on their answers. The measurement charts will also be collected at the end of

the class period.

Summative evidence: The measurement chart worksheet will contain a question on the

back. This question will assess their understanding of estimating. These will be collected

and analyzed.
What Content Knowledge

is necessary for a teacher The teacher must have knowledge of the units of measure and the definition of

to teach this material? estimate. The teacher must also have knowledge of misconceptions and

misunderstandings that the learner may have.

What background Students must know:

knowledge is necessary How to order three objects by length

Compare the lengths of two objects by using a third object
for a student to Express the length of an object using a whole number of length units
successfully meet these

objectives?
Students will be assessed during the introduction lesson (this lesson) and that will

determine how well they can compare and measure objects using standard units of

measure.

Learners

Boys:13

Girls:14

ELL: 2 (both boys)

OCD: 1 (boy)

ADD: 1 (boy)

This group of learners is very diverse and very bright. This grade level splits math classes

based on ability and this is the advanced group.

What misconceptions

might students have about

this content? Students may be confused about the unit of measure they will be using for this activity.

They will be given an object to measure another object. This will need to be explained

thoroughly.

Lesson Implementation
Teaching Methods Whole-group

Independent work

Step-by-Step Plan Time Who is Each content area may require a different step-by-step format. Use

responsibl whichever plan is appropriate for the content taught in this lesson.

Teacher

Gather students at the carpet for direct instruction.

Explain that this unit will introduce different units of measure. Have

students explain what a unit is and give examples.

Make a class list of the many units of measure.

Introduce the term estimate and have one student give a

10:35 definition. Explain that estimating means to find a number close

Students to an exact number.

Next, introduce the activity that they will complete.

Today we are going to talk about measuring things. We are going to

measure many things in this room by using the objects that I will

give you. You'll see how long or tall these things are.

Go over the expectations for working in a group and establish voice

level.

Hand out the worksheet and explain how they will fill it out.

Once they receive a worksheet, have them go back to their tables

and wait for their measuring tool. Give each table a different tool.

10:50 Release the class to move around the room.

Teacher

Circulate the room to observe and assist students as they measure

objects.

Call time and ask the class to meet at the carpet.

Ask them to sit next to someone that has a different measuring tool

than them.

Silently observe and look for differences in the data you both

collected. What do you notice? Did you measure the same objects?

How were your answers different?

Have two groups share what they found to be different. Ask

questions like why do you think that is? to help them think

critically.

11:00 Explain that each measuring tool was a different size, therefore the

measurements differ.

Go back to the list of units and explain that understanding this

concept will help them throughout the unit as they measure.

Remind students that there is a question on the back of their

worksheet. They will answer it and turn the worksheet into the

basket.

What will you do if a student struggles with the content?

Struggling students will be given extra support during the activity. Based on

what the teacher gathers during the whole-group lesson, they can be

partnered with another student during the activity.

What will you do if a student masters the content quickly?

Students that master the content quickly will be asked to compare the

standard units of measure. They will write them in order from smallest to

largest. This will give them an opportunity to test their knowledge of the unit.

Meeting your students If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural

needs as people and as backgrounds of your students?

learners

Students will learn that other countries measure in different units than the

United States. This can be turned into a class activity where they can share

where their family is from and discover what units they use in that country.

(time dependent)
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?

This lesson will allow the students to practice measuring various types of

objects. This can be connected to jobs in the community that require

knowledge in measurement.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional

challenge during this lesson (enrichment)?

Students that need enrichment will create a list of measures of unit in order of

smallest to largest. They will then pick one object they measured and

determine what unit would be most suitable to measure that object.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional

language support?

The room contains labels on some objects around the room and they can use

that to fill out the chart. They can also be partnered with a peer to complete

the activity, given permission from the teacher. The question on the back of
