Questions

1. Balance the following equations for the reaction of

arsenic(III) sulfide with aqueous chloric acid:
a. As2S3(s) + ClO3-(aq) H3AsO4(aq) + SO42-(aq) +
Cl-(aq)
b. Cl2(g) ClO3-(aq) + Cl-(aq)

2. Write cell notation for the following cell reactions:

a. Zn(s) + CuSO4 (aq) ZnSO4 + Cu (s)
b. AgCl (s) + H2 (g) HCl (aq) + Ag (s)
c. H2 (g) + O2 (g) H2O (l)
d. H2(g) + I2(s) 2HI(aq)

3. The final step in the production of magnesium from

seawater is the electrolysis of molten magnesium
chloride, in which the overall reaction is
Mg2+ + 2Cl- Mg(l) + Cl2(g)
Write equations for the half-reactions occurring at the
anode and at the cathode, and indicate the direction in
which electrons flow through the external circuit.

4. Write the anode and cathode half-reaction for the

following galvanic cell. Write the equation for the overall
cell reaction.
Al(s)|Al3+(aq)||Pb2+(aq)|Pb(s)

5. From the positions of the respective half-reactions in

standard reduction potential table, predict whether the
following reaction is spontaneous. If it is not, write the
equation for the spontaneous reaction.
Sn2+(aq) + 2Fe2+(aq) Sn(s) + 2Fe3+(aq)

6. Given cell notation as follows

Hg(l)/HgCl(aq)//TlNO3(aq)/Tl at 25C
Determine the cell emf at the same temperature if the
Mercury ion concentration is 0.15M and Thalium ion
concentration is 0.93M.

7. What are the overall cell reaction and the standard cell
potential of a galvanic cell employing the following half-
reactions?
Cr3+(aq) +3e- Cr(s) ECr3+/Cr = -0.74 V
MnO4 (aq) + 8H (aq) +5e Mn2+(aq) + 4H2O
- + -

EMnO4- /Mn2+= +1.51 V

8. Calculate G for the reactions that take place in the

galvanic cells:
a. Mg(s) + Fe2+(aq) Mg2+(aq) + Fe(s)
Ecell = +1.93V
b. Al(s)|Al3+(aq)||Pb2+(aq)|Pb(s) Ecell = +1.53V

9. The calculated standard cell potential for the reaction

Cu2+(aq) + 2Ag(s) Cu(s) + 2Ag+(aq)
is Ecell = -0.46 V. Calculate Kc for this reaction. Does this
reaction proceed very far toward completion?
10. A galvanic cell was constructed by connecting a nickel
electrode that was dipped into 1.20 M NiSO4 solution to a
chromium electrode that was dipped into a solution
containing Cr3+ at an unknown concentration. The
potential of the cell was measured to be 0.552 V, with the
chromium serving as the anode. The standard cell
potential for this system was determines to be 0.487 V.

unknown concentration?
