Methodology

2.1 Materials
The experiment was performed using the Electron Diffraction Tube D U19171, a 5kV anode voltage
supply, a 6.3 V filament voltage supply and connecting wires.

2.2. Approach
The set up for the experiment, along with labels for each part, was initially constructed as shown in the
schematic diagram illustrated in Figure ____ (specify figure number). The voltage controls on the power
supply were first adjusted to zero and were then turned on, waiting for a few minutes for the filament to
warm up. Afterwards, the 6.3 V filament voltage source was first switched on for at least one minute to
allow the cathode temperature to stabilize before applying anode voltage. After a minute, the same was
done for the anode voltage. The latter was then increased to the desired potential, making sure that the
anode current does not exceed 0.2 mA. A bright central spots and two diffraction rings would have
appeared on the screen. In order to sharpen the apparent concentric rings, the external bias was adjusted.
The external bias was also used to regulate the anode current. The diameter of both the inner diffraction
rings and the outer diffraction rings at each accelerating voltage was measured and was tabulated in Table
____ (specify table number).
