SWEARING-IN OF SGT. & NEW OFFICERS:

Sgt. Corey Robinson: Sgt. Robinson joined the Northampton Police Department in
2001. Prior to working at Northampton Police Department he served in the United States
Army. Coreys first assignment after completing the Field Training and Evaluation
Program was to the 11-7 shift. He spent 6 years there, and was one of the departments
Field Training Officers. In 2009, Sgt. Robinson was promoted to Detective and served in
the Detective Bureau for 9 years. While in the DB, Corey concentrated on general
investigations, digital forensics and cyber crimes. He worked on numerous, lengthy,
multi-jurisdictional cases and has assisted countless police deparments in this area. Sgt.
Robinson was also a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Corey
has earned his Bachelors degree in Sociology from UMASS Amherst and his Masters
degree in Criminal Justice from UMASS Lowell with a graduate certificate in Forensic
Criminology. Sgt. Robinson will now serve as the departments Administrative and
Community Services Sergeant. In this role Sgt. Robinson will serve as the departments
Training Coordinator. He will also supervisor the School Resource Officer, Community
Outreach Officers, and D.A.R.T. Officers. He will be overseeing all of the departments
community policing functions and be the liaison to our community.

Off. Jessica Sullivan: Officer Sullivan is a Hyannis native, and recently moved to
Holyoke. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Westfield
State University. She also earned an Associates degree in Law Enforcement from the
Community College of Rhode Island. She previously worked as a Correctional Officer for
the Essex Country Sherriffs Department in Middleton, MA. She completed an internship
with the Cranston, RI Police Department in 2009. She also completed an internship with
the Murray Judicial Complex in Newport, RI. Officer Sullivan recently graduated from the
Western MA Police Academy 54th Recruit Officer Class and is currently assigned to the 11-
7 shift.

Officer Steven Rattelsdorfer: Officer Rattelsdorfer is a West Springfield native and is

currently living in West Springfield. He is currently enrolled at Southern New Hampshire
University with a major in Computer Information Technology. He also earned an
Associates Degree from Holyoke Community College in Computer Information Systems.
Prior to working at NPD, Officer Rattelsdorfer worked in the Agawam Public Schools as an
IT Tech and for the Hampden County District Attorneys Office as their Systems
Administrator. Officer Rattelsdorfer also recently graduated from the Western MA Police
Academy 54th Recruit Officer Class and is currently assigned to the 11-7 shift.

AWARDS:

Officer Matthew Montini (Exceptional Duty Medal): In 2016, Officers on the midnight shift made a significant
effort to combat and identify impaired operators. During the course of the year officers on that shift made a 140
arrests for OUI. One officer who stood out for his exceptional service in this effort is Officer Montini. Officer
Montini is committed to traffic safety and engaged in numerous motor vehicle stops that led to 30 OUI arrests for the
year. For his exceptional service and constant dedication to this effort, he is being awarded the Exceptional Duty
Medal.

Officer Andrew Kohl, Officer Scott Gregory, Officer Timothy Zantrofski (Exceptional Duty Medal): On May
12, 2016, officers responded to 241 Jackson St, Hampshire Heights for a report of multiple people fighting with
knives. Upon arrival officers located a male who was holding 2 large knives. This subject refused to follow officers
commands and refused to drop the knives while raising the knives and jabbing them in the direction of the officers.
After continuous commands from officers, this male eventually discarded both knives and was placed into custody.
Their training and professionalism led to a peaceful resolution. For their outstanding and exemplary efforts and in
showing great restraint when dealing with this armed subject, these officers are being awarded the Exceptional Duty
Medal.

Sergeant Patrick Moody (Exceptional Duty Medal): On September 24, 2016, officers responded to a report of an
out of control juvenile who was destroying property and had armed himself with a kitchen knife. Prior to officers
arrival the individual refused to drop the knife and barricaded himself in a room, preventing police from entering. Sgt.
Moody was able to develop a rapport with this male, and he ultimately convinced the male to throw the knife out of
the closet where he had barricaded himself. A short time later, the male exited the closet and was taken to Cooley
Dickinson Hospital for a mental health evaluation. For his outstanding and exemplary efforts and showing great
restraint when dealing with this armed subject, Sgt. Moody is being awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal.

Dispatchers Nina Barszcz, Lisa Day, and Meghan Cahill (Letter of Commendation): On May 04, 2016 Dispatch
received a call for a possible kidnapping. Immediately these dispatchers began to gather information and dispatched
officers to the scene. During this time, it was very hectic in dispatch along with a heavy call volume. The swift and
precise information that these dispatchers were able to gather and provide to officers was crucial to this case and
undoubtedly led to the discovery of the vehicle and the apprehension of the suspect in a nearby community. For all of
these efforts, Dispatchers Barszcz, Day and Cahill are being awarded letters of commendation.

Detective Peter Fappiano (Exceptional Duty Medal) Detective Kevin Rowell-Greenfield Police Department
(Certificate of Commendation): On December 13, 2016 Detectives Fappiano and Detective Rowell were conducting
surveillance in the area of 20 Bridge St. While investigating possible drug activity, these detectives were able to
recover and seize over 1500 bags of heroin from an individual, who was subsequently arrested. For their exceptional
service and investigative skills, Detective Fappiano is being awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal, and Detective
Kevin Rowell is being awarded a Certificate of Commendation.

Brendan McKinney, Officer Michael Szawlowski (Unit Citation Award), Lt. Matthew Garvulenski Hampshire
Sherriffs Office, Northwestern District Attorneys Anti-Crime Task Force (Certificate of Commendation):
Beginning in mid-2016, Detective Fappiano began to compile investigative files and information related to a Human
Trafficking case, which had connections to our city and other cities and towns within the area. As the investigation
unfolded, Detective Fappiano spent countless hours conducting surveillance, investigating, coordinating and typing
search warrants. Detective Fappiano was the lead investigator and spearheaded this investigation. As this
investigation grew, all detectives within the Northampton Police Department were instrumental in each step of this
case, working as a cohesive unit, which ultimately led to numerous search warrants, and arrests, in several
Massachusetts locations and some in New York. This case was also supported by the Northwestern District
Attorneys Anti-Crime Task Force, the Hampshire County Sherriffs Office, and the Attorney Generals Office. Lt.
Garvulenski was assigned to this case permanently and was instrumental in assisting in this investigation. During the
investigation, the Anti-Crime Task Force assisted with surveillance, staffing, support, and assisted with the multiple
search warrants that were executed on December 13, 2016. This case ultimately led to numerous search warrants and
arrests. The following awards are being presented as a result of this highly commendable case: Detective Peter
Fappiano (Exceptional Duty Medal), Det/Lt. Borowski, Det/Sgt. Victor Caputo, Sgt. Corey Robinson, Detective Peter
Fappiano, Detective Luann Caputo, Detective Michael Briggs, Detective Brendan McKinney, Officer Michael
Szawlowski (Unit Citation Award), Lt. Matthew Garvulenski (HSO), Anti-Crime Task Force (Certificate of
Commendation).

Sergeant Corey Robinson, Detective Michael Briggs (Exceptional Duty Medal): On July 08, 2015, Detectives
Michal Briggs and Sgt. Corey Robinson began to investigate a sexual assault case that had occurred within our city.
As this investigation unfolded, Sgt. Robinson and Detective Briggs continued their efforts seamlessly and spent
numerous hours conducting interviews and forensically examining evidence. Due to their highly exemplary efforts,
the case moved forward and ultimately led to a 25 year prison sentence for the suspect. For all the efforts put forth in
this case Sgt. Robinson and Detective Briggs are being awarded the Exceptional Duty Medal.

Officer John McCarthy Officer Carlos Lebron (Distinguished Service Medal): Officers McCarthy and Lebron
began their assignments as Field Training Officers in 1995, training the first group of officers who formally attended
the Northampton Police Field Training and Evaluation Program (F.T.E.P.) Since their time starting with the F.T.E.P.
Officer McCarthy and Lebron have trained numerous officers. This program assures that the officers joining our force
are held to the high standards that our department and community demand from us. For their significant efforts and
years of service to the F.T.E.P., Officers McCarthy and Lebron are being awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

Sergeant Corey Robinson (Exceptional Duty Medal): Beginning in January of 2015, Sgt. Robinson, who is a
member of the Massachusetts Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, assisted Easthampton Police Department
with an investigation regarding child exploitation. As a result of this investigation, Easthampton Police and Sgt.
Robinson uncovered numerous individuals who were involved in child pornography, and who were sexually
exploiting children. Sgt. Robinson partnered with other local, state and federal agencies, which ultimaley led to
numerous search warrants in many different states and jurisdictions. This investigation also led to the arrest of five
individuals so far. For his exemplary efforts and outstanding dedication to duty, Sgt. Robinson is being awarded the
Exceptional Duty Medal.
Officer Andrew Kohl, Officer Kenneth Kirchner (Meritorious Service Medal): On August 05, 2016, Officers
Kohl and Kirchner responded to a report of a structure fire on Round Hill Rd. Both Officer Kohl and Kirchner were
the first responders to arrive. They entered the building, knowing that it was actively burning. These officers risked
their own personal safety to go door-to-door, to assure that the building was evacuated. While they were in the
building there was heavy smoke. Due to their efforts, all residents were evacuated. For their exemplary efforts and
risk of personal safety, Officers Kohl and Kirchner are being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

Fitness Awards/Fitness Challenge:

In 2014 the Physical Fitness Medal was added to the NPD Awards program. The medal is awarded on a yearly basis
to those personnel who successfully pass a voluntary annual physical fitness test. This year, the department
implemented the Fitness Challenge. Individuals from Northampton Police, Northampton Fire Rescue and
Northampton Public Safety Dispatch all participated. The following personnel earned the Physical Fitness Medal:

EDUCATION:

The Educational Achievement Medal recognizes those personnel who have attained a four-year degree or a graduate
degree. Our department values higher education and is very supportive of officers who want to further their education.
Our department values education and requires an Associates or 60 college credits to be considered for a Police
Officer position with our department.
