reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: S8P4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information to support the claim that electromagnetic (light) waves behave
differently than mechanical (sound) waves.
Brief Description of Learning Experience:

This will be an intro into teaching what sound waves are, and how they behave. Students will create a
poem/rap/song based off a science topic of their choice (look at previously taught material in the year, and
give examples). They will record their material, it must be between .45-1.5 minutes long, and incorporate
background music/beats to their final product.

After completing the project, students will upload their music file to the designated classroom blog page.
When it has been approved by the instructor, all files will be accessible to the students, and parents to listen
to. Each student must respond, and evaluate at least 2 files with a constructive comment. Students will be
given the opportunity to adjust their file as needed. In class, we will examine how sound waves behave, and
dissect the various parts of a wave and compare them to light waves from a previous lesson using the files
the students created.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating

Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): LoTi level 4; students are using
technology to produce products that are meaningful, and authentic to them. Students can take several
different paths, and teacher is simply a guide.

Importance of technology: Without a blog, or website for students to post their files to, it would be very
hard to allow universal access to students and parents. It could be done in the classroom, but would not
have the same impact, and parents would not have access.

Inspiration (optional): If you used existing example as a model for your project (whether in part or
whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Some possible parental concerns would be the availability of
personal information, possible inappropriate material, and images of the students could show up on the
blog. All students must fill out a parental form giving permission to post student work online, and the
teacher will approve all content before it goes live online. Avatars, and first names will be used for students
to make public comments.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. My goal is for students to gain some technology
skills, gain meaningful knowledge on the topic they choice to create a song on, and for students to get a real
world experience in creating a sound file, editing it, and in the process they will see, and understand the 1
science behind sound waves.
