Educational organisation

First Year
Students must take compulsory courses (core
courses), which are designed to impart the prerequisite
methods and theoretical basis for successful research.
They must take courses from at least three out of four
core fields with a minimum of 54 credits during the first
year. Core fields are:
Macroeconomics
Microeconomics
Econometrics
Management Science
We expect students to pass the core courses with an
average of good or better in order to guarantee
supervision during the research stage.
In rare situations, we allow for approval of external
courses as substitutes for our core courses.

Second Year
In the second year, students select their specialisation
track, find their supervisors, and begin working on their
first research paper. In parallel, they take the elective
courses of their specialisation track to broaden and
deepen their knowledge. Students must take at least
24 ECTS from these courses or the remaining core
courses. Up to 12 study points can be gained from
suitable courses in other fields, soft skills courses, or
the teaching of a course. In total, students have to
successfully complete a minimum of 90 ECTS in order
to finish the programme. We expect course work to be
finished after a maximum of two years. The doctoral
thesis should be finished after four years.
A list of all elective courses can be found at http://www.
bdpems.de [http://www.bdpems.de].

Research Phase
During the research phase, students devote their time
primarily to their own research and the writing of
research papers which culminate in the dissertation.
They participate in seminars according to their
interests. In some seminars, invited speakers bring
students up to date with leading research in their
respective fields. Other seminars provide students with
a framework for discussion of their own research.

Study abroad unit(s)

The BDPEMS motivates international mobility. It is

necessary for participants to stay in Berlin during the
mandatory course work. Exceptions can be made in
cases of joint PhD agreements with partner
universities.
During the research phase, participants may visit
conferences abroad or become visiting students in a
cooperating research centre abroad in accordance with
the corresponding supervising professor in Berlin.
