HPE 1201 ASSESSMENT FOR ATHLETICS

Written submission due Friday 21st March; week 4, (10%)

In groups of 4 prepare a 3 week planning document for teaching/coaching
sprints and relays. You may choose the year level that you aim your program
at. This program must be suitable for in class PE lessons which consist of a
wide range of abilities in the students, but it may also be useful for students
training after school for an interschool carnival.

You may choose to focus on either:

Sprints 100m, 200m and relays
OR
Sprints 200m, 400 and relays

The students train 2 OR 3 times a week for 3 weeks ie. In total your group
will prepare 6-9 sessions. You decide whether these 3 weeks are to be the
only 3 weeks in the year of PE focusing on sprints OR they may be the first 3
weeks only of a 6 week program which eventuates with a major competition
in class or a carnival. Your program should consider:

skill progression & clear learning objectives

safety & maximum participation
sprinting technique and appropriate training sessions for improvement
adequate rest between repetitions on the track suitable for a 100, 200
and/or 400m sprinter
measurement of improvement in your areas of choice from the first to
the 3rd week; this doesnt need to be a timed sprint over 100, 200 or
400. Be creative!
Knowledge of the training components that a sprinter requires: eg:
speed, strength, flexibility, acceleration, fast practice, speed endurance
for 200-400.
Knowledge of the energy systems required

The document can be presented in a lesson plan format, a table, notes, or

essay format; whichever you prefer. Please make the program succinct and
address the criteria in the assessment rubric. Size 12 font.

You are encouraged to view a range of resources, including the readings,

the internet, direct communication with coaches, library/books, journal
articles etc. Please reference all communication and resources using APA
format. References from the last 10-15 years are preferred.

A printed copy is to be submitted to Susan Andrews during class on Friday

21st March, week 4 and a copy must be placed on the blackboard on the
discussion board for other class members to access by this date. All students
are encouraged to keep a digital copy of all programs as these are good
references for the future.
