DESIGN OF GUIDE BUND : SIKKU BRIDGE

(A) BASIC DATA

1 Design discharge of river =5265 Cumecs

2 Mean Design Velocity (V) =4.10 M/Sec

3 Type of river =Major

4 Type of material likely to be used =Locally available earth predominant by Cohesionless

5 Effective linear waterway =466 M

6 HFL at bridge Site =RL 274.4 M

7 Longitudinal Gradient of River bed =Max 1 in 50

8 Soil Properties =i) Angle of Repose = 38 degree

ii) Cohesion= 0

(B) DESIGN CALCULATION / STIPULATION

1 Top width of Guide Bund -6 Mtr (Ref clause 5.3.1 of IRC-89-1997)

2 Free Board -1.5 Mtr

3 Side Slopes -2 (H) : 1 (V) (Adopted keeping in view the soil properties)
(Ref clause 5.3.3 of IRC-89-1997)

4 Thickness of Pitching on River Side slope of Guide Bund :-

Thickness of Pitching (t) = 0.06 (Q)1/3

where Q = Design Discharge in m3/Sec

t = 0.06 (5265)1/3= 1.04 m

Thickness of Pitching limited tpo 0.50 m w.r.t clause 5.3.5.2

of IRC-89-1997.

5 Size & Weight of Stone required for slope Pitching

Diameter Stone required for Pitching (d) =KV2

Where V = Mean Design Velocity of River = 4.10 m/Sec

K = 0.0282 for face slope of 2 (H) : 1 (V)

d = 0.0282 (8)2

As Stone boulders of such dia may not be available for slope

pitching, concrete blocks are to be used (Ref clause 5.3.5.1
of IRC-89-1997)

6 Weight of Stone / Concrete Block required for slope Pitching

Weight of stone / concrete block required for slope pitching
worked out from Fig 5.6 of IRC-89-1997 for Design velocity
of river 4.10 m/Sec and River side slope of 2:1 = 265 Kg =
0.27 MT
7 Determination of size of Concrete Blocks for Slope Pitching

Keeping in view the minimum weight and size requirement

of stone / Concrete blocks tobe used in slope Pitching and
the permissible thickness of slope pitching as worked out
above wrt the stipulations made in IRC 89-1997. The
preferred size of concrete blocks adopted considering the
specific gravity of concrete 2.4 is 0.50 x 0.50 x 0.50 m thick
i.e having weight 0.30 MT.

8 Provision of Filter media (ref clause 5.3.6 of IRC-89-1997)

As the embankment of proposed guide bund will be

constructed with the locally available materials whose liquid
limit is less than 30 and are predominantly noncohesive in
nature,use of filter media will be necessary below the slope
pitching.

Usualy thickness of such filter media ranges between 200

mm to 300 mm.

As the thickness of slope pitching is maximum (1 m thick )

and the slope is 2 (H) : 1 (V) a filter media thickness of 300
mm (in two layers of 150 mm each ) will be necessary to
ensure the stability of slope pitching . (Ref note 5 of
clause 5.3.6.2 of IRC-8)

9 Design of Launching Appron

a) Thickness of launching appron will be 1.50t at inner end

2.25t at the outer end .

Here, thickness of pitching (t) = 0.50 m. Hence thickness of

launching Appron should be

i) Inner end = 0.75 m

ii) Outer end = 1.125 m

(Ref clause 5.3.7.5 of IRC-89-1997)

b) Slope of launching appron should be 1.50 (H) : 1 (V)

being made of concrete.

(Ref clause 5.3.7.6 of IRC-89-1997)

c) Width of launching Appron = 1.50 dmax,where dmax =

maximum scour level of the river below bed level.

For the Subject bridge .

dmax = [RL 268.98 m (lowest bed level measured )- RL
263.00m (max scour level)]= 5.98 m

Width of Launching Appron = 1.5 dmax for straight reach ;

i.e.,1.5 x 5.98 = 8.97 m Say 9 m

Width of launching appron for curved mole head of guide

bund = 2.25 dmax = 2.25 x 5.98 m = 13.455 m Say 13.50
m
