Purpose of this Survey

Themainresearchfocusesareonthefollowinglevelsofawarenessofthefollowingquestions:
1)thehealthrisksofextensivecomputeruse.-2)thenegativeeffectsofcomputersonthe
environment,and-2)theawarenessoftechnologiesforinput,output,anduserverification
(biometrics).

Iamhopingtolearnthelevelofawarenessthepublichasofthehiddenissuesbehindtheuseof
computers.Whilecomputersarehelpful,therearehiddeneffectsthatmanypeopleareunaware
of.Thissurveycanhelpinfindingouthowmuchpeopleareawareofthehiddensideeffects,as
wellastheirknowledgeofnewtechnology.

Method

Thispaperisanattempttofigureouttheawarenessofgreencomputingamongvariousrandom
peoplewhoarefamiliarwiththeuseofcomputersandusethemextensivelyintheirday-today
lives.Thesurveyfocusesmainlyonthefollowingquestions:
1. Thehealthrisksofextensivecomputeruse
2. Thenegativeeffectsofcomputersontheenvironment
3. Theawarenessoftechnologiesforinput,outputanduserverification(biometrics)
Toseekanswerstothesequestions,ashort,10questionquestionnairewaspreparedand
distributedtopeoplewhoarefamiliarwithcomputers,somemoreadvancedthanothers,whouse
computersforworkandpersonaluse.Thesurveyconsistsoffivesections:(A)demographic
questions;(B)acomputerusesection;(C)knowledgeofhealthrisks;(D)knowledgeofnegative
effectsofcomputersontheenvironmentand(E)awarenessoftechnologiesforinput,outputand
userverification(biometrics)section.
Inthedemographicsection,questionsregardinggenderandlevelofusewerepresentedtothe
individuals.InsectionBofthesurvey,thequestionsconsistedofthefollowingquestions:
1. Age
2. Howmanyyearshaveyouusedacomputer?
3. Howmanyhoursperdaydoyouusuallyusethecomputer?
4. Howmanycomputersdoyouown?
5. Whatistheaveragenumberofpagesprintedperday(inclwork)
InsectionCofthequestionnaire,questionswerepresentedtoobservetheknowledgeofthe
healthrisksattributedwiththeextensiveuseofcomputers.Auserispresentedwiththeoptionto
checkiftheyareawareofthefollowingproblems:Musculoskeletalproblems,Repetitivestress
injury,Visionproblems,HeadacheandStressDisorders.
InSectionD,theuserisaskedtolistthesinglemostharmfuleffectthatthecomputerhasonthe
environment.Theuserisaskedtoinserttheanswerintoatextbox.Theuserisalsoaskedifthey
areawareofthenegativeeffectsontheenvironment,aretheyawarethatcomputersaremadeof
variousheavymetals(listed),aretheyawarethatthemetalslistedcontributetoglobalwarming,.
Theyarethenaskedaboutprinting.Theusersareaskediftheyeditdocumentsbeforeprinting,if
theyrecyclethepapertheyprint.
InSectionE,peopleareaskediftheyarewarethattheycanusebiometricstoaccesscomputers,
andiftheyknowthatthereistechnologythatcanmeasurebrainimpulsesandusethatas
computerinput.
Thesurveywassenttovariouspeopleinmygroups,aswellassomeatwork.MonkeySurvey
wasusedthesurveyiseasilycreatedanddatagathered.

Theresultsshowthat56%oftheofthosepolledusedacomputerfor1-20years,and44%have
usedacomputerfor11-20years.Intermsofprinting,theagegroupprintthemostisthe41-50
yearoldprintsthemost.Thechartbelow,showingtheagerange,andthenumberofprinted
pagesperdayshowstheyoungergroupprintslessthantheoldergroup.Thisshowsthattheyare
moreconsciousofwhattheyprint.

Whenitcomestore-cycling,40%recycletheirprintjobsarethe31-40Agegroup.Thiscouldbe
surprisingasitwasexpectedthehighernumberswereexpectedtobeintheyoungerrang.
Almostallofthoseasked,areawarethattheuseofcomputershasanegativeeffectonthe
environment.
Whenaskediftheyareawarethatcomputerscontainlead,48%respondedtheywereawarethere
wasleadincomputers.

Whentheparticipantswereaskediftheywereawaretherewasnegativehealtheffectswith
continuouscomputeruse,100%wasaware.Thisisprimarilyduetotheconstanteducationinthe
workplaceontheuseofcomputersandhealth.
Whenaskedaboutbiometrics,thetablebelowshowsthemajorityofthosethatknowofusing
biometricsisthe31-40yearagegroup.Thisissurprisingasitisexpectedtheyoungercrowd
wouldbemoreknowledgeable.

Conclusion

Ingeneral,fromthedescriptivestatistics,itwasobservedthatthereisquiteagoodknowledgeof
greencomputing,mostlyshownbythenumbersshowingthatmostdoedittheirdocuments
beforeprinting,andtheydorecycletheirprinting.Whatissurprising,isitwasexpectedthatthe
youngeragegroup(20-30)wouldmorelikelytobemoreknowledgeablethanthe31-40age
groupwhenitcomestoknowledgeofbiometrics.
Itisexpectedthatwithalargergroupsurveyed,thenumberarelikelytochangeonfavourofthe
youngeragegroupwhenitcomestoknowledgeoftechnologyandrecycling.Forthemostpart,
theagegroupof30-40wasthemostawareofbiometricsandotherinputtechnology.
Thebiggestchallengeintheassignment,wasthegatheringofthequestions.Also,thesite
MonkeySurveyisadecentsurveytool,butthedatacouldnotbedownloadwithoutpaying.Asa
result,thesurveywasdistribute,buthadtodecipheredfromthefreetoolsandputintoExcel.
IfIwastore-dothissurvey,adifferenttoolwouldbeused,alsomorepeoplewouldhavetobe
asked.ThereisalsothefacttheagegroupsIhaveaccesstoisnotthatgreat.
