Gear Test Stand

Final Project
Lane Zupkov
Test Stand Design Requirements

A test stand is required to test gears of various sizes ranging from reasonable minimum diameter
to a diameter of 10 inches. The fixture must allow for axial and radial directions relative to each
other to range between 0 to 110 degrees. The maximum power input of test stand will be 150h.p.
and 10,000 RPM, the test stand will be able to test gears through the range of requirements. To
allow for documentation and failure analysis the test stand should be encased in an enclosure to
allow videography and also lubrication that will be encountered, similar to gearbox
environments.

Analysis and Loading at Maximum Input

Design Assumptions
To ease design requirements certain criteria will be assumed, such as the hardware connecting
the pillow blocks to the stand table, also the stand table thickness and material. The shroud
covering the stand will be idealized to prevent pieces of fractured gears to cause injury to
observers. Lubrication will be provided in an idealized situation to provide minimal friction.
Angular acceleration will also be considered idealized and ramped up slowly to not cause Jerk.
