INTRODUCTION
The location that we have chosen for our mini project was at MBKS Stutong
Community Market which is located at Tabuan Jaya. The market is a two floor building
whereby on the ground floor, there are vegetables, seafood and meat section while on second
floor is where the eateries place section are located. The figure below shows the building of
the MBKS Stutong Community Market.

On 15th March 2017, we arrived at the market around 7.00am in the morning and
interviewed some of the local seller about their daily business. Early in the morning, the local
seller started their business around 4.00am to 5.00am and most of people come to the market
are around 6.00am until 11.00am. The fresh seafood and vegetables can be found in this
market at reasonable price. Below are several figures of fresh seafood like prawn, fish and
crabs.
OBJECTIVES

1. To know the business hours of the MBKS Stutong Market Community.

2. To know what is the main factor affecting the fish monger business.
3. To identify what is the most expensive fish that customers usually buy.
4. To identify what is the most purchased fish.
5. To know what day/s in a week most people come.
DISCUSSION

We had interviewed one of the fish monger about their business hours. Generally,
their business hour is between 4.00am until 12.00pm. The sellers have to be early because
some of the customers will arrive at 5.00am.

From the interview, we also got to know that weathers are greatly affected their
business especially their income and stock of products from the fishermen. When the raining
season comes, the fishermen cannot go to the sea to catch the fish because the risk of the boat
tossing in the waves is high. At this season, the fish monger will only use frozen fish instead
of fresh fish, this will indirectly cause a slightly higher price than the usual.

We also had interviewed on what are the expensive fish that usually purchased by
customers. Actually in this market a lot of expensive fishes that customer willing to buy and
all of it will depend on the size, taste and reasonable price. According to the fish monger, the
most expensive fish is seasonal fish where this fish will only entered Sarawak waters in the
month of March until June. The Seasonal Fish is the type of fish that migrate from other to
another place to find the place that fit with their habitat, and during dry season the
communities may include fishes trapped in a contracting aquatic environment according to
(Lowe-McConell, 1987) .

Seasonal Fish

We also had interviewed a fish monger named Meiji. The first question that we asked
him was what fish does people buy the most when they come to your stall?, then, he replied
that it is the bawal kuning fish. Bawal kuning is actually one of the most popular fish that
easily found in the fish market, when we went there we believe that most of the stall at the
Stutong Community Market sell this type of fish. The fish can be easily identify since it has
the common shape of the bawal fish by mean it has a flat and almost rounded body shape
with a hint of yellow colour in the end of its each fins. According to Meiji, this fish are
affordable, it is surely not that expensive and cheap either. Besides, he said that a lot of
people buy this fish because it tastes good. Maybe that is why this fish really attract a lot of
buyers to buy it. Here is the picture of bawal kuning taken during the interview.
Then, we also had interviewed a kind aunty with the spectacles and short hair, we
asked, on what day/s does a lot of people come to the market?, and she simply said that it is
on the weekends. We best believe that it is due to the holidays and a lot of people have time
to go to the market compared on the weekdays. She also said that on weekends, the stall
usually closed 2 hours earlier than the usual, 4.00am - 10.00am, since mostly they will run
out of fish after people bought it.
CONCLUSION

MBKS Stutong Community Market will be operated everyday from Monday until
Sunday and the business hour is between 4.00am until 12.00pm and only until 10.00am
during weekends. During weekend, number of customers will increase more than weekdays
and the stalls closed early during weekend since their vendible is sold faster. In this market,
the most expensive but highly purchased fish is the Seasonal fish, while bawal kuning are
the most commonly purchased fish in the markets. In general, distribution and marketing of
freshwater fish have been developed efficiently to some extent.
