Given Angle of outward stroke o= 60 degrees
Dwell angle d= 30 degrees
Return stroke angle r= 90 degrees
Base circle radius R= 5cm
Roller radius r= 1cm
Length of follower arm l=5cm
Horizontal distance of pivot from base center = 10cm
Angle of oscillation = 30 degrees
Assume clockwise rotation of cam
Calculating max height h of the roller

Draw an arc with length l= 5cm and angle subtended as 30 degrees

Measure the straight line length which is found to be h= 2.59cm
SHM Displacement Diagram

o d r

Along y axis is the lift with 1:1 scale that makes it as 2.59cm
Along x axis is the angle of rotation with 1:10 scale taken as 18cm till
the return stroke angle
The displacements are 0.17, 0.65, 1.3, 1.94, 2.42 and 2.59 cm
The Configuration

Pivot Circle

The dashed circle is called prime circle. The pivot O is located with
the horizontal distance from center of base circle given as 10cm. The
smallest circle is the roller with radius 1cm.
Marking Equal Segments on Pivot Circle
C B

Arc AB subtends o= 60 degrees Arc BC subtends d= 30 degrees

Arc CD subtends r= 90degrees
Marking Arcs from the points on the Pivot Circle

With a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i, j, k, l, m as centres and radius 5cm, mark

arcs to intersect the Prime circle.
Measure displacements on these arcs from the prime circle as
obtained from SHM diagram by drawing circles from each of the
points on the prime circle.
These arcs are highlighted from the dotted ones.
P

Start drawing a new set of the same circle with radius 1cm and
centres as the end points of the previously obtained arc segments
as shown. Then the Cam profile is the smooth curve drawn as a
tangent to all these circles starting from point of tangency P
and ending at Q
