We thank our Lecturer Dr. Shiromi Karunaratne for giving us the opportunity to work on a
reverse engineering project as a team. Also, we thank the assistant lecturers for guiding us
through.

1. Introduction
6 | Page
The object we have selected is a trimmer. It trims hair easily using different scales. The trimmer
we have is the PAOLI RFCZ-681, made in Japan. It is an electrically and mechanically
functioning product. We hope to develop its battery life and scaling capabilities

2.1 Prediction
What is the purpose of this product? The purpose of this product is to help an

8 | Page
individual to trim his/her bodily hair,
especially for men for their facial hair without
causing any injuries or harshness to the skin,
unlike the razor and scissor
How does it work? This product has a rechargeable battery. We
probably would have to charge for about 3-4
hours to get it running for more than 30
minutes. There are two shafts which move
together but to either side, which would trim or
cut the hair. They move fast so that it quickens
the task. The button is available to switch
on/off. Maybe it has a mechanism connecting
the button and the blades. It has a motor
because there is a sound when switched on and
working.
What market was it designed to appeal to? The product is used by both male and female
of age groups 12 and above, because they will
know how to use it safely.
List the design objectives for the product. 1. Easy handling and comfort.
2. Be quicker and accurate than the
traditional way.
3. Better performance than previous
products.
4. Better battery performance

List the constraints that may have influenced Problems in determining the shape
the design. they would have had problems with the
design in making it more comfortable
to handle.
Tested different materials, over and
over again - They might have had
problems with the material used to
design this trimmer but they have
settled with plastic
9 | Page
Size They would have had problems
with the size of the trimmer, to make it
portable.
Battery Problems with the battery life
as to how long the fully charged
product will be useable.
To determine which scaling will satisfy
the user They would have had
problems with the scaling properties of
the trimmer.
Weight The weight of the product
would have been a problem. This
product is slightly heavy, but carriable.

2.2 Observation
How do you think it works? The power button would be closing the circuit
to which the battery, motor and other
electronics inside the product are connected.
The motor probably is connected to the blade
which moves. Only one blade moves while the
other is stationary.

How does it meet design objectives(overall)? The design is done for easy and comfortable
handling. A motor is fixed to make the blades
move to cut or trim the hair. The charging port
is kept for recharging purposes. A light is
placed for showing us that it is charging.
2.3 Disassemble
How does it work? The battery is charged and the motor is run by
it through the circuit, which is controlled by
the control switch. A shaft is held by a shaft
holder and the other is connected to the motor,
moves horizontally to trim the hair.

5. Statement of the problem

Heavy weight, and takes time to charge. It is noisy when switched on. No indicator to show the
amount of charge available. Less efficient rechargeable battery. Gives out heat and sometimes
the hair gets caught. No proper scaling to trim. Hair or dust gets into the trimmer easily. Water
degrades the product.

Justification of the text and line spacing used

Times New Roman font style is used for all text in this document.
The content page uses 2.0 line spacing to make it more suitable and attractive.
The percentage (%) markings in the time periods of table 3 uses text size 11 because of
the limited space.
Table 4 uses 1.0 line spacing to display it in a single page and make it easily readable.
