Even though there is a few documents found on Southeast Asia about music

and its relevance in the world, music in this area is known to be very abundant in
different regions and tribes that existed in the early days. Some of the instruments
that are seen in Southeast Asia are mostly based on India and China but touched
with their own uniqueness and interpretation as to how it is played, used and made.

According to Jos Maceda, who focused his works on nature/environment, time,


space/atmosphere and technology, he sees nature as part and source of sound
expression; time as means of experiencing events and its repetition;
space/atmosphere as a state of things that provides sensation, mood and feelings;
and technology as two pronged that consists of hardware and software with which
relevance of both is embedded in the culture of people. Using these four elements, I
see these as a representation of the past and the future. How the nature has shaped
the culture and practices of the people are observed at the early times. Up to now,
that we have technology, we still adapt to it without leaving the other elements that
Maceda pointed out. Through time, with which people gain experience from,
development arose, skills were sharpened and repetition happened. And through
these experiences that took place, in a specified space/atmosphere, different
sensation and feelings were witnessed.

As a time-scaled point of viw, I would propose a project entitles Continuous


Harmony. For me, at the early times, there is a harmony between people and
his/her surrounding and still seen up to now. This project aims to let people, not only
see, but also to hear what people experienced from then as well as the transitions
of different era in Southeast Asian history. The project involves dynamic and
interactive exhibit with which there is a long tunnel with two sides, the past and the
present, and the middle, may be a transition part. On the past side, people get to
wear different clothes, try instruments such as kolitong, tongatong, gabbang,
kaleleng, sitar, and a lot more made of bamboo. While listening and trying
instruments that mimic the sound of their surrounding such as bord chirping,
whistling of wind, rain pouring, river flowing and sounds of animals, they get to see
puppet or shadow art as illustrations. This goes as well on the present side where
technology such as computers, gadgets, and instruments are exhibited. Through
this interactive tunnel, one should feel the mood of both sides. This depicts how
humans react to different time scales and what seemed to be different and repeated
as well. I think one cannot fully understand the meaning of today without looking
back to where it started.
