Players.

History in brief: Indian Ceramic Industry

Indian Ceramic industry evolved from potteries to advance ceramics; archaeological

findings indicate that decorated pottery work found in Indus Valley at Lothal (2326
BC) civilization located in Ahmadabad district, Gujarat, India.

In 1958, Shri D.C.Majumdar started commercial earthenware manufacturing modern

ceramic units in Gwalior, India. In the beginning 20th century hardly 6 or 7 ceramic
manufacturing units were present. Afterwards number rose to 26 units in 1939, 66
units in 1957 and 125 units in 1990. Currently only Gujarat state has more than
1800 units of various ceramic manufacturers. However most important clusters are
Kolkata, Khurja, Morbi, Thangadh, Chennai, Gwalior, Dharwad, Hubli, Manglore,
Bangalore and Mumbai.

Mr. Parshuram Ganpule established pottery industry from the base "The Parshuram
Pottery Works Ltd" in Morbi (1912), Wakaner, and Gujarat.

Gujarat occupies number one position among Indian states, nos of manufacturing
roofing tile, sanitary-ware, vitrified tiles, crockery, glazed tile, pottery, electric
porcelain, other refractories and art-ware units together accounts more than 1800
units. Sanitary-ware units account 97% of small scale & 40% large scale units of
Tiles Manufacturers in India.

The specific energy consumption of manufacturing ceramic products in INDIA

(Thermal: 1.34 MKcal/ton & Electrical: 210 KWh/tonne) is higher than other
developed countries, ITALY (Thermal: 1.16 MKcal/ton & Electrical: 139 KWh/tonne),
thus requirement of improving energy efficiency is needed via technological
advancement.
Ceramic industry processes consists of Raw-material processing, Crushing/Grinding,
Spray drying, Shaping : Pressing,Extrusion,Casting, Jiggering, etc.., Drying, Firing :
Tunnel Kiln, Roller Kiln, Shuttle Kiln, Down-draft, Electric Kiln
....,Finishing/Polishing/Sorting/Packing

"KILNS" are essential part of ceramic industry; it should be producing consistent

product, zero defects with maximum efficiency. Under certain conditions one can
improve the performance of older kiln through well-engineered and executed
modifications with proper design and professional execution of necessary changes.

Modern firing techniques require advanced kiln furniture, due to higher energy costs
now a days kiln require kiln furniture that can withstand firing cycles without
affecting or damaging the product being fired.

Over a past several years, only few manufacturers of kiln furniture products are
available in Indian market; most of the products are being imported from China,
Spain, and Italy due to their better quality products as well as manufacturing
techniques.
