Subject/Grade: Math 7

Date: 3/9/2017-3/10/2017

Title of the Lesson

Cars and Careers

MGSE7.RP.3 Use proportional relationships to solve

multistep ratio and percent problems. Examples: simple
interest, tax, markups and markdowns, gratuities and
commissions, and fees.
STEM Standards
ELAGSE7W6: Use technology, including the Internet, to

produce and publish writing and link to and cite sources as
well as to interact and collaborate with others, including
linking to and citing sources.
NexGen Science
Standards ELAGSE7W7: Conduct short research projects to answer a
question, drawing on several sources and generating
additional related, focused questions for further research
and investigation.

ELAGSE7SL5: Include multimedia components and visual

displays in presentations to clarify claims and findings and
emphasize salient points.

Standards
1.1.1 Follow an inquiry-based process in seeking
knowledge in curricular subjects, and make the real-world
connection for using this process in own life.

2.1.1 Continue an inquiry-based research process by

applying critical-thinking skills (analysis, synthesis,
evaluation, organization) to information and knowledge in
order to construct new understandings, draw conclusions,
and create new knowledge.

2.1.3 Use strategies to draw conclusions from information

and apply knowledge to curricular areas, real-world
situations, and further investigations.

2.1.4 Use technology and other information tools to

analyze and organize information.

2.3.1 Connect understanding to the real world.

3.1.1 Conclude an inquiry-based research process by

sharing new understandings and reflecting on the learning.

We began the lesson by talking about our dream cars. I let

the students share and we discussed that an education is

crucial to having things that we want to have. Then, I
Strategy/Engagement
discussed that was exactly what they were about to do.
Activity

Students are using the Chromebooks to search for their

dream car and calculate exactly how much it costs to own

the car. Then, the students research a career field that

interests them in the fields of Science, Technology,
Engineering, or Math. The media specialist will share a
symbaloo list of some jobs in those areas along with
schools in Georgia that offer those degrees.

The students will summarize their career and explain what

the career does. The students will discuss the school
pathways needed to obtain the career. Then, the students
decide if they would be able to afford their dream car
based on their career choices.

-Students are creating a Google Presentation to present

the information and are working/turning in this assignment
in Google Classroom.

The task is differentiated by student interests.
