INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN
Guided Practice:
Step 1 (5 min): The teacher will explain to the class that stretch and
expand mean the same thing. They are Synonyms. If we want to
write a number in expanded form we need to stretch it out. The
teacher will draw the first stick figure below and tell them this is
Steven, Steven likes to stretch things out. The teacher will then draw
the second stick figure on the board. The teacher will ask the
students to look at the numbers. The number 463 is the same as 400
+ 60 + 3. This is called Expanded form (Expanded form with
Stretched out Steve, n.d.).
Step 3 (1 min): The teacher will play the Expanded Notation song
on ConnectEd McGraw Hill on the computer projector.
Step 4 (1 min): The teacher will show a hundreds flat and ask the
class how much it is worth. The teacher will show a ones block and
ask what will happen if we add the ones block to the hundred. The
teacher will write 100 + 1 on the board =101.
Step 5 (3 min): The teacher will write 1+20+5 on the board. The
teacher will have the students think about how they can use base 10
blocks to model this number. They will then be asked to turn to a
partner and take turns telling one another how they would do it, and
discussing their answers. The teacher will have a student come to the
teachers desk and model the number with base 10 blocks under the
ELMO. The class will do this several times and practice with different
numbers.
Step 6 (5 min): The teacher will give each student a scratch paper
and a crayon. The teacher will show the video Teaching Elementary
Math Expanded Form #1 found here https://youtu.be/GlQqEVcXfTI.
(Math Park Video, 2012). The students will use their crayon and
paper to race the cowboy in making a number in expanded form.
When students finish they will hold up their paper and the teacher will
walk around the room and check their answers. The teacher will put
another standard number on the board and have students race to
expand it. The teacher will do this several times to help the students
practice.
Step 7 (10 min): The teacher will put the students in pairs and
explain how to play Rollem and Expand. Students will roll a dice
three times to make a three-digit number. They will then expanded
that number on their worksheet.
Step 8 (5 min): Students will open their McGraw Hill math books and
the class will work together to fill out the See and Show section
together.
Step 10 (5 min): The teacher will pass out an Exit Ticket. Students will
need to expand a three-digit number and turn it into the teacher.
Student Assessment/Rubrics: The teacher will know students have met the
objective if they get at least 10 out of 13 correct on the On My Own
worksheet.
