Instructional Objective:

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the symbolism of the

American Flag through a hands on art activity.

Students will show their understanding behind the meaning of what the flags and stars
represent by completing an exit ticket sheet.

Active Instructional Plan:

Anticipatory Set: I will begin by showing students a picture of the American Flag
and ask if they know what this is. From there I will begin reading the story about
the American flag and have students pay attention to key details of why there are
13 stripes, and 50 stars on our flag.
Modeling: After the story has been read I will show students what they will be
doing next with the all the materials that will help them create their own version of
the American Flag. Students will one by one come and get the materials that are
needed to make the flag. I will write the directions on the smart board so they know
in what order to follow directions.
Closure: When students are done making their flags I will again ask them why our
flag is so important and what it symbolizes. They will then turn to the people at
their table and discuss what the different parts of the flag mean. After doing that
they will look around and see if each of their classmates flags have 13 stripes and
50 stars on it. Then students will need to fill out their exit tickets in order to leave
for recess. If they are not done with their flags, they will still complete the exit ticket
and finish up the flags later.

Assessment/Evaluation:

In order to assess this lesson I made an exit ticket slip for each student to fill out. On it
asks what the meanings of the stripes and stars are and from here I will be able to assess
if they know and understand the symbolism behind why there are stripes and stars on our
American flag.

Modifications/Differentiation:

I plan to modify this activity by having students who finish early help the students who are
taking more time to finish their projects. This will be a strategy to help students socialize
with each other while helping their classmates in a way that is educational and fun.
Students in this class have a difficult time staying on task, but enjoy helping each other.
This will be an incentive for them to finish their work so that they can help out their
classmates.
