Classroom Management

It is my passion to ensure that all students are provided a comfortable and engaging learning
environment where they are encouraged to take risks in pursuit of developing their knowledge
and skills. To accomplish these goals, I believe it is imperative to have a solid foundation of
structure as well as established (positive) student-teacher relationships. For me, education
reaches beyond academic standards into helping students to be advocates for themselves
taking control of their own successes. Therefore, in addition to following our daily classroom rules
and procedures, I will hold high expectations of all students. In this class, we will have positive
attitudes and we will work hard this will be NOT be a class of cant but a class of cant YET!

Classroom Procedures and Routines:

1. Attention signals Various attention signals will be introduced, practiced, and
used in our classroom. Student variation and appropriate
cultural references will be encouraged because a progressive
middle school education promotes the belief in students having
a voice within curricular and behavioral decisions that will
affect them. Once an attention signal has been used, students
are expected to be quiet and focus all attention on me within 3
seconds or less!
Example attention signals:
Call and respond
FREEZE
Give me 5 (1 mouth shut, 2 eyes looking, and 2 ears
listening)
Countdowns you are quiet and listening in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
2. Entering Class Students are expected to enter class quickly and quietly,
finding their seat and beginning the brain-jogger. Students
must be on time meaning they are in class before the tardy
bell rings. If a student is tardy, they will enter quietly and take
their seat quickly handing me an excuse slip from another
teacher if applicable.
3. Brain-Jogger At the start of each class period, students are expected to be
seated with their supplies, immediately working on our daily
brain-jogger. The purpose of the brain jogger is to get their
mind revved up, building on prior learned knowledge in
preparation for what we will be learning.
4. Leaving Class Students will not be permitted to leave class for any reason,
unless an emergency arises. They will be given 3 hall-passes
each nine weeks that they may use to get something from their
locker or go to the restroom. Class is dismissed when the bell
rings, unless stated otherwise by me. Students are expected to
be working until the bell rings!
5. Using the restroom Students will have time outside of class to use the restroom it
is their responsibility to use their time wisely and use the
restroom throughout the day when they are allowed. CLASS
TIME IS NOT RESTROOM TIME.
6. Homework Students will be assigned homework each night, Monday
Thursday.
7. Turning in Work Students will turn in work into their appropriate class turn-in
bin. Bins are color-coded per each class-period.
8. Walking in Students are expected to walk in a straight line to wherever we
hallways are headed as a class. Students are not permitted to talk and
be disruptive as we will be passing by other classrooms where
students are engaged in learning!
9. Absent Students who are absent will need to see me as soon as they
return to collect all the missed work.
10. Classroom Students are expected and encouraged to participate I want
Discussions to hear what they have to say! Students must make all
questions and comments relevant to the current discussion.
Our classroom is a risk-free zone students do not need to feel
afraid to contribute!

basis:
Library/Lab use
