THE HANGING OF THE COMMERATIVE STREET SIGN DESIGNATING THE 100 BLOCK OF RHODE ISLAND AVENUE, NW AS THE WILLIAM H. JACKSON WAY THURSDAY, APRIL 6, 2017 CORNER OF 1ST & RHODE ISLAND 10:00 A.M. ------------------------------------- Mr. William H. Jackson envisioned and operated a highly successful hair salon (Jak & Company Hairdressers) for nearly 50 years. During those years, his was the first African American-owned salon to be located in the central downtown area. In 1988, in response to increasing downtown re-development, the salon was moved to the 100 block of Rhode Island Avenue, NW to space in Bloomingdales historic Sylvan Theater building that is now occupied by the Boundary Stone Public House expansion. Mr. Jackson also was active in the greater DC community where he assumed numerous professional leadership roles, while also serving as a community mentor and humanitarian to the young and old in Bloomingdale. Throughout his career, Mr. Jackson actively advocated for increased professionalism, demonstrated leadership on critical professional issues such as training and licensing, and actively promoted cosmetology to youth as a means for making an honest living that can provide business and home ownership, as well as a financially stable family life. Mr. Jacksons life embodies the story of persistence and resilience guided by a burning vision in the face of continual political and social/community change. Consequently, this neighborhood heros hard work, business acumen, and exceptional commitment to community serves as a reference point and guidepost for all in Bloomingdale!
