Sample recount text

Leela has written a recount on her trip to Ulu Bendul Waterfall with her friends. Read her recount and
answer the following questions.

Last holiday, my friends and I went on a trip at Ulu Bendul Waterfall. First, we gathered
at the bus station early in the morning. The journey there took an hour and half. It was our first trip
together.

Everyone was so excited with this trip. All of us brought the snacks and drinks from home
hence, we did not have to stop anywhere before reaching the waterfall. We were captivated by the
scenic view of hills and forests upon reaching there. The beautiful scenery impressed not only me but
all of us. Besides that, the chirping of birds and the sound of the waterfall made me feel at peace. Ulu
Bendul Waterfall was famous for its beautiful recreation park among tourists.

We did many things there. We hiked the hills, then, swam at the waterfalls and many more. As
we swam at the waterfall, suddenly the rain started pouring. We ran to find a safe shelter. It was funny
and fun to see a few of my friends running and trying to save the foods from getting wet because of
the rain.

After a few minutes, the rain stopped pouring. Later, we had a small barbecue near the
waterfalls. We rested for a while after eating. Before packing home, we hiked up the hills. We found
many unique flora like wild orchids, flytrap and many others as we climb. After one hour of hiking, we
were extremely tired but we had to pack up to go home. We reached home in the evening.
We felt really sad leaving the Ulu Ayam Waterfall. While in the bus, we agreed to come back again
there. Although it was tiring, it was a precious and fun trip.
(Familiarisation) Task sheet 1
In the Leelas recount, she has used words and phrases like last holiday, then, later, after, and

before to show the sequence of events. These expressions are called transitional words. Can

you spot these words? Underline them in the recount.

Why do you think transitional words are important? If you do not have them, how will that affect

the recount?

(Familiarisation) Task sheet 2

Besides transition words, Leela has also used sentence connectors such as besides that,

upon, as and hence to link ideas. Can you spot the sentence connectors? Circle them in the

sample recount.
The ideas below are taken from the recount. Read the recount to see how Leela connected the

two ideas. Write the word/expression she uses in the space below.

Notice how Leela has joined the ideas. Is there any change in the structure of the sentence?
Punctuation? Discuss.

Why do you think Leela joins the two ideas? Why doesnt he leave the two ideas as separate
information?

(Familiarisation) Task sheet 3

Leela describes her visit to the Ulu Bendul Waterfall in four paragraphs and she has recounted the

events in chronological order which he has organised into paragraphs. A paragraph is a group

sentences that describe an event which is elaborated to include information on aspects of Who,

When, Where, How and Why so that the reader can understand what the writer is recounting. Now

lets see how Leela does this in her recount.

Study the recount again. Complete the grid below to find out how Nathan has developed the

paragraphs.

After lunch, I met some of my childhood friends there. We walked along the
river and caught some fish to bring back home. I had got a big siakap fish and I
was very excited. The fish was cooked by my granny for our dinner. We went to
sleep and I came back home the next day. It was a great holiday although it was
short.

Production stage (Task sheet 1)

asked to write a recount on what happened during your trip. Using the pictures and the notes

provided below to write out your recount.

*remember to use the transition words and sentence connectors appropriately.

Notes:

Students are asked to write out the recount and that would be randomly selected to do

correction in groups.
After correction session, teacher provide the similar composition but removing the notes below

the pictures and students are asked to write a composition in pairs. Similarly, correction
session would be conducted if they are errors especially in the use of transition words,

sentence connectors and tenses.

At final of production stage, students are asked to write the similar composition individually by

setting a short test.

The practice would be reinforced if the students results not satisfactory.

I had focused more on the familiarisation because almost all of my form one students required that

stage. I have conducted this lesson but I could only further with one task for practice stage, then I had

been busy with my PT3 and SPM students. I hope to come out with many task for the practice stage.

Hope this would not affect my grades. Thank you, Madam Er.
