Social Action Production Proposal

Name of production

The future of Henley High Street

Reason for following this issue

Henley needs its original high street back with independent shops as a place for
people to go and give the community something to do instead of filling the high
street with coffee shops.

Henley town Centre is becoming marginalized as a shopping destination and in

the process; many small independent shops have had to close down. For example,
David Jack the owner of Hubbledays, had to close down his job due to having
been priced out. He faced a significant increase in annual rent of 26,000 with
very high business rates of 11,000. The footfall in a lot of these independent
shops have dropped dramatically, and the internet is a big factor in that.

Production angle, how and why

Educational and informative angle on our social action

A production layout (beginning, middle and end)

Opening:

Opens with a narrator talking about our social action and the statistics to do with
it. Cut-a-ways of Henley high street over the narrator talking.

Middle:

Interviews take place (Vox Pop); get a more educational view on the subject.
Follow peoples lives who are affected by the issue.
End:

Petition on saving the Henley high street, bringing the community back together.

Target Audience and why

The target audience are the community of Henley. Middle-aged people are most
effected, as these are people who have lost their jobs and have no interest in
sitting in coffee shops like the new younger generation.
I sent out a survey about the target audience to the public and gained some
results. From the results I gathered that the target audience would be aimed at
both male and female genders and that it would be aimed at people ages thirty
five and above which I think it spot on because the community of Henley is an
older generation and Parents so the results are exactly the original thought we
had for our desired target audience.

I dont think the documentary would appeal to people that live outside of Henley
as it doesnt concern them and they wouldnt have many opinions on Henley if
they were not there every day. However this social action may affect people that
live outside Henley if they come into Henley to shop as the shops are decreasing
and thats what the video is about so it depends on the individual people.
Where your video will be uploaded / shown

We aim to air our social action video on the Henley website and YouTube. We also
have our own Weeblys and the video will be on there. A link to video will also be
on the petition site that we will set up so that the public can see the visuals of
Henley and this will then make them more likely to get involved and sign the
petition.

Copyright issues / legal ethical issues you may face

In terms of the content, we think that we could be copyrighted for the brand use of
Starbucks when we go to compare a chain shop to an independent shop. We could
overcome this by seeking permission from Starbucks letting them know that we plan on
filming not only one of their cups, but film inside the shop too.

We plan to layer our social action video with music, and we will make sure they are
licensed downloads so that they are definitely available to use.
Everywhere we are filming is on public property such as the town centre
and in alleyways. The only place we will need to get permission is if we
are standing outside a shop or want to film some inside of a shop in which
case we will ask the shopkeeper beforehand. We will also warn the members of the public
that we are speaking to so that they know they are going to be videoed.

Production

Before you go off and film please be aware of the following.

PRODUCTION TIPS:

Interview in relevant locations

Make sure there is no background noise when filming - ask to turn off all machines or film
in a quiet location and if outside try and use a wind cover and microphone.

Use TWO cameras when filming - One following the interviewer and one following you as
you had with your multi camera unit

Get MORE footage than you need - you can always cut items out but you can't add once
you have filmed

Think about how you want the final product to look before you start filming

Add archive footage (clips, newspaper clippings, footage from news stories etc...) but
ALWAYS reference them on screen and make sure you have permission to use them

Once filming is finished make sure the following is complete BEFORE you start
to edit your production
