Historic Gold Coast Brownstone Revitalization
Location: Chicago Gold Coast
Designer: Gail Drury, CMKBD
Project: Whole House Remodel
Builder: Dave Olseng, Inc.
Solution: Brimming with character and
exquisite architectural details, this historic homes
kitchen and baths were modernized but not
updated enough to meet the new homeowners
needs. The captivating kitchen is the centerpiece
of the homes extensive renovation project. Read

The clients kitchen design focus was twofold:
preserve the elegant homes historic character and
create a functional kitchen for two avid cooks. Dave
Olseng of Dave Olseng, Inc., the general contractor
and partner, constructed an addition to build out
the home beyond its original 1881 footprint.
Anchored by an island, the new kitchen is truly a
two-cook kitchen. Super White Grabill cabinetry
envelopes the perimeter of the room, offset by
the rich, custom chocolate-colored stained wood
island. A banquette greets guests while a snack bar
looks out on award-winning gardens.
Demilune mosaic tiles in honed Angora marble
create a soft, wave-patterned backsplash that
complements the Quartzite Caf Latte stone
countertops. Two hammered pewter sinks and a
custom metal and wood hood add a nice touch
of sparkle. Wood panels cover tall Sub-Zero
refrigerator and freezer doors, adorned with elegant,
curved-patterned, leaded glass antique mirrors.
The end result is an elegant, modern kitchen feeling
right at home in the 138-year-old brownstone.

Chicago Brownstone Master Bath Suite

Included in the historic Gold Coast brownstone renovation was the homes master
bath. To make room for this majestic master suite, the revised floor plan borrowed
space from an existing bedroom and closet.
The entrance corridor to the bathing area houses two identical his and hers vanities.
Wall cabinets on each side of the mirrors add storage. The mirror detail helps open the
space visually.
The exquisite marble tile detail on the walls and floor of the bathing area brings
elegance and sophistication to the space. Tall built-in cabinetry with antique mirrored
doors contributes wardrobe storage and architectural details.

Gracious living
The dramatic architectural features in this bathroom
have been reinforced by a new interior design
that places the tub in a starring role
When a bathroom has plenty of drama
architecturally, its often best served by an
interior design thats not overly ornate.
That was the thinking behind this
remodeled bathroom, which was designed
by Janice Teague CKD, CBD, of Drury
Design Kitchen & Bath Studio.
The designer says the original room
was very traditional, with elaborate crown
mouldings and a lot of heavy stone.
The owners wanted a much cleaner
look there is already plenty going on
visually with the dramatic vaulted ceiling

and deeply recessed arched windows. The
bathroom also had a large Jacuzzi-style
tub that took up an entire wall on one side,
and was never used.
Teagues solution was to highlight
the existing architectural symmetry, by
placing a smaller Victoria & Albert free-
standing tub in the center of the room
between the windows. To accentuate this
focal point, the wall beside the tub is clad in
decorative tiles that resemble wallpaper.
To crisp it up a little, we introduced
chrome Schluter finishing strips around
the edge of this tiled wall, and around the
recessed niche above the tub, says the
designer. These also add a little sparkle.
A scaled-down version of the tiles lines
the interior of the steam shower. Here the
tiles follow the line of the vaulted ceiling.
The walls in the shower have matching
Schluter chrome strips.
The furniture in the bathroom features
hickory wood with a dark Cocoa Bean
stain. It includes a long vanity unit with an
open lower shelf and tall cabinets at either
end providing plenty of storage.

The owners wanted their bathroom
to incorporate a dressing area, with some
closet and linen storage, says Teague. So
we added a large armoire that sits oppo-
site the vanity the two sides of the room
are balanced visually. This has dappled
mirror glass on the center doors.
Further storage is provided by two
new hampers tucked beneath the arched
windows, which double as seats.
For a finishing touch, Teague added a
dark, silvery accent tile to the marble-look
porcelain tiled floor.
