Blind Devotion is a short film based on a YouTube channel called the Jubilee

Project (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_99ySDoC1fw). This film is about how

daily life routines between the happily married couple are displayed and how through

every little thing they do is backed up by their mutual love. For example, the wife quotes

her mother saying, that a man with dirty clothes is a man thats not loved by his wife.

They both go throughout their day with their daily routines until one day she faints on the

way to work. She visits her optometrist due to her sudden blurred vision. She then finds

out that she has FCED (Fuchs Corneal Endothelial Dystrophy), which eventually leads to

total blindness. This heavily affects her relationship with her husband due to her

misconception of her husband losing sight of their love as she is losing her sight. The

wife isolates herself because of the lack of self-confidence in making their marriage

work. However, the husband displays his true colors of love to her by secretly helping her

do daily routines without here knowing. At the end he says, Cecilia (the wife) will never

know how much I do for her, and I dont ever need her to know. Thats how I still love

her even though she doesnt want me to.

Auguste Compte believed in Positivism, which he believed society came from

natural instances that involve having an unbiased knowledge (Witt). What Compte

would have thought of situation between the wife and the husband would be inevitable
through the positivist theory. Compte would analyze the husband and come to the

conclusion of that the husband would ultimately have a strong morals and logic. Society

would have been expecting the husband to utilize logic and do what he can to make the

marriage work no matter what the situation or the outcome was.

Karl Marx is who started the conflict theory and how people are the way they

are because of their social class due to limited resources (Witt). The couple could

afford to go through such turbulence due to their social class and their level in society. If

they have been in the lower part of society, there would have been a different result due

to her illness. It seems they could financially afford such burden so that contributed to

their durability of loving each other. If they have been a lower part of society, they

would have argued due to the pressure of financial sustainability. Although it seems

unfair and bias, there are other obstacles within the lower class that the illness would

have been another steep obstacle to overcome.

Emile Durkheim paved the way for the founding of deviances (Witt) and he

would argue that what happened was essential to testing their love. He is known to say

that it would challenge peoples present view (Witt). In the beginning, the wife and

husbands love for each other didnt seem to be out of the ordinary. What they were

doing for each other should be the standard for any married couple. However, it was

until the wife starred become a little deviant due to her corneal disease. This challenged

her view of her husband and how her husband would distance himself because of her

complication. The husband proves otherwise in the video and the outcome was the

outcome because of her deviance. Their love was challenged and it was how they dealt

with it is what made their love stronger for each other.

Blind Devotion is a great example of structural-functionalism. Going back to

the quote that a man with dirty clothes is a man thats not loved by his wife it shows

family, work, and even religion plays a part in how the love sustained. Without the morals

and ideals instilled from each counterpart, the husband would have difficulty of

continuing his solidarity. However, the husband defies the odds and he continuously

proves that society requires functionalism. With the combination of all the elements, it is

possible for anyone to overcome any social obstacle.
