Unit/Lesson Title: bursting beans Year: 3

Aim for Lesson Syllabus Outcomes:


To observe the growth of seedlings and how they become plants.

Prior Knowledge: Resources: plastic see through cups, napkins, worksheet, seeds,water, windowsill
That plants need sun light water and nutrients to grow

Introduction (Engagement)
Group the students in class around a table, give them all a worksheet each and read through it, answering any enquiries as the come up.
Take students to science lab.
Body
(Exploration/Transformation/Presentation)
In science lab spread the students out around the tables, give each student one napkin and a cup each. Demonstrating that you open up the
napkin then fold it in half across so you are left with a long skinny napkin. With the napkin make it in a cylindrical shape and place it
inside the cup when the students have finished doing this, give them two mire napkins, instructing them to loosely scrunch them up, Questoining and
explaining that this will hold our napkin in the cup. observation

After students have both napkins in the cup, give each of the students one bean seed instructing them to place it on the inside of the cup
about half way down between the napkin and the cup so you can see it from the outside, repeat with seeds 2 and 3 but separating each
bean giving it it's own space.

Once all beans are in gather all the students around one of the taps and demonstrate how the water is going to be added, add a decent
amount of water emphasising that we don't want to drown them. Explaining that the napkin "will drink the water, then the beans will
drink the water from the napkin" allow each of the students to add the water to theirs monitoring each.
Conclusion (Presentation/Reflection)
Take the students back to the classroom instructing them to place their cup on one of the windowsills that is on the left side of the
classroom and then to gather around a table, Questioning
Ask the students the following questions Observations
How long do they think it'll take for the bean to sprout?
What colour they think the roots will be?
What colour the plant will be?
