I agree that the issue of gender disparity in the stem fields is a point that needs
emphasizing since so many people believe that women and men are equally qualified.
My authors theory of college only being half the battle is extremely useful because it sheds
insight on the difficult problems that minority students face once in college due to their
socioeconomic status.
Megan - I agree with the author that we need more female teachers and females in general in
the STEM fields because my experience confirms it, but I dont think that there is an issue when
it comes to the pay and promotional opportunities that a female gets in contrast to a male.
Darrah, Marjorie
Gist - Although Vallejo, Darrah, and Eddy all focus on the issues regarding female
underrepresentation in the higher education system in their research, the study conducted by
the University of Chicago addressed issues surrounding not only male underrepresentation but
also the socioeconomic and racial bias that underlies in each gender as well. The study also
gave information on the differences between black males and black females with regards to
different academic performances based on their situation at home such as having a mother
around.
