PHYS102 LAB ORIENTATION PRACTICE

1. The standard resistor color code is given below.

-Choose three different resistors R1, R2, and R3 and record their color code values in the
table below.
-Using DMM measure the resistance of the same resistors and record the values in the table
below.

R1 R2 R3
Color code Value
Measured Value

Data Analysis: Find the percent error between the color code value and measured value for
each resistor. Are the measured values within the tolerance of the resistors?

2. -Turn on the PC.

-Launch The Data Studio software.
-Introduce the Power Amplifier to Analog Output A of the interface.
-Then introduce Signal Generator (output signal) by double-clicking on it.
-Place the resistor R1 on the breadboard between two junctions.
The breadboard as shown in the Figure below, consists of small junctions into which wires
and components can be connected. It also has a and + row for connection to external power
source.

-Connect the positive lead of the Power Amplifier to one lead of the resistor.
-At the other lead, connect the positive lead of the DMM set up to measure the current
through the resistor. Be sure to use the correct jacks for a current measurement on the DMM.
The DMM should be on the 200 mA range. The negative lead of the DMM should be
connected to the other lead of the resistor to complete the circuit.
-Increase the voltage in the signal generator in 1 V steps and record the current at each step in
the table below.
-When finished, return the voltage to zero and turn OFF the Signal Generator.

Voltage(V) 1V 2V 3V 4V 5V 6V 7V 8V 9V 10V
Current(A)

Data Analysis: Draw a voltage-current graph on a graph paper. Find the slope of the best fit
line which gives the ressistance of R1. Find the percent error for R1 values found in part 1 and
part 2.
