EEECB353 COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

PROJECT TITLES, SEM 2 16/17

Each group is expected to design a complete communication systems using either Matlab
programming or Matlab Simulink. The system includes transmitter and receiver module.

Each group must consist of 4 members.


Proposed projects are listed in the Appendix. It is first come first serve basis. Each team has
to get approval from the lecturer to confirm the project title, latest by 1st Dec 2016 (Thursday).
The project is divided into TWO (2) parts. Part A should be completed by progress report 1,
while Part (B) should be submitted in week 13. Note that Part (B) is a continuation of Part (A).
All team members are expected to actively involves in both Part (A) and Part (B). A summary
of task delegation among team members has to be described and submitted, together with
the final report.

The group project is assessed based on following criteria:

a) Progress Report 1 [30%]

PROJECT 1

PART (A)

A 5 sin 2600 message signal is modulated with 7 sin 24000 carrier signal, using balanced
modulator.

(i) Write the mathematical expression of the modulated signal. [2 mark]

(iii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete AM designed systems using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show

Assume guardband of 200 kHz. Draw block diagram of the multiplexing system showing all
the local oscillator frequencies and their respective output frequency. [4 marks]
(iii) Based on the values chosen in Part B(ii), simulate the complete FDM system using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show the

PROJECT 2

PART (A)

An FM transmitter modulate a message signal of 10 cos 2400 with carrier signal of cos 25000,
to put out modulated carrier power of 26W and Bessels bandwidth of 2400 Hz. Assume the resistance
is 10.
(i) Determine the modulation index, amplitude of the carrier signal and total transmit power.
[5 marks]
(ii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete FM systems using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [10 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the demodulated

PART (B)

(i) Three similar message signals as in Part (A) are multiplexed using FDM technique with
guardband of 100 kHz. However, the modulated signal is bandlimited by Carsons
approximation. Draw block diagram of the multiplexing system showing all the local
oscillator frequencies and their respective output frequency. [5 marks]
(ii) Simulate the complete FDM system using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include
the transmitter and the receiver. Show the implementation of these values in your
simulation. [10 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output
signal is the same as the analog input signal. [15 marks]

PROJECT 3

Your company have successfully offered a project to reverse engineering an obsolete remote control
system. Subsequently checking the output signal from the modulator, the modulated signal is
described as:
() = 10 sin 2(2000) 4 cos 2(2200) + 4 cos 2(1800)

(i) Draw the power spectrum of the modulated signal. Label fully. [3 marks]
(ii) If the amplitude of the modulating signal in increased by 10%, calculate the efficiency. [2
marks]
(iii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete AM designed systems using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show the

PROJECT 4:

PART (A)

A radio broadcasting station transmits audio signal of 30 kHz. The Carsons bandwidth of the FM
modulated waveform is 150 kHz. The total transmit power of the FM signal is 112.5 Watt with a load
resistance RL = 1 . Assume the carrier frequency is 1000 kHz.
(i) Draw the power spectrum of the modulated signal. Label fully. [4 marks]
(ii) Find the Bessel bandwidth. [1 mark]
(iii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete FM systems using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [10 marks]
(iv) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the demodulated
output signal is the same as the modulating signal. [10 marks]

PART (B)

PROJECT 5:

PART (A)

Uniten Comsys Society is planning to setup Uniten first FM radio station, Putrajaya Hitz FM.
Frequency range of 5.0 MHz to 5.2 MHz has been allocated for this radio station. The signal is radiated
using an 50 W transmitter power. The input is a modulating signal with amplitude VM and frequency
of 20 kHz. (Assume load resistance = 2 and deviation sensitivity, Kf = 5 kHz/V)
(i) If the radio station utilized all its allocated bandwidth, sketch the power spectrum of the
FM signal. [5 marks]
(ii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete FM designed systems using
MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [10 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the demodulated
output signal is the same as the modulating signal. [10 marks]
(iv) Display the frequency spectrum of the modulated signal. [5 marks]

PART (B)

The total bandwidth of Putrajaya Hitz FM is then bandlimited according to Carsons bandwidth, to
give way for Uniten Muadzam Commsys Society to setup their radio station called, Muadzam Hitz
FM. Assuming the modulating signal used by Muadzam Hitz FM is similar to the Putrajaya Hitz FM,
design communication system for both radio stations, which are multiplexed using FDM with
guardband of 10KHz.
(i) Calculate the percentage of power saving and bandwidth saving for Putrajaya Hitz FM. [
2 marks]
(ii) Draw complete block diagram of your design showing all the local oscillator frequencies
and their respective output frequency. [3 marks]
(iii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete FDM system using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iv) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output

PROJECT 6:

PART (A)

Given a frequency modulated signal, VFM (t) = 10 cos [1000kt + m sin80kt] with its unmodulated
carrier power is 5W and power at the 1st and 2nd sideband pairs are 3.364W and 1.225W respectively.
Assume R is 10 and the frequency deviation sensitivity is 20 KHz/V.
(i) Determine the modulation index [2 marks]
(ii) Draw the power spectrum. [3 marks]
(iii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete FM designed systems using
MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [10 marks]
(iv) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the demodulated
output signal is the same as the modulating signal. [10 marks]
(v) Display the frequency spectrum of the modulated signal. [5 marks]

PART (B)

If the bandwidth obtained in part (A) is doubled, what would happen to the total transmit power and
the peak frequency deviation? Assume the message signal remains unchanged.

(i) Demonstrate the above scenario using MATLAB and display its frequency spectrum. [5
marks]
(ii) If the modulated signal is then band limited by 20%, determine the new total transmit
power. [5 marks].
(vi) If two similar modulated signals as in Part (ii) are multiplexed using FDM, simulate the
complete FDM system using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the
transmitter and the receiver. Show the implementation of these values in your simulation.

PROJECT 7:

PART (A)

An analog message signal has been sampled at 40k times per second. It is given that the sampled voice
signal is ranged between -5 V to +5 V with a resolution of five bits using linear quantization.

(i) Determine the dynamic range and the best SQR. [2 marks]
(ii) If a cable with a minimum bandwidth of 2 MHz is used to transmit several voice signals,
calculate the number of voice signals that can fit through the cable for digital transmission.
[1 marks]
(iii) Design the pulse code modulation (PCM) codebook for the voice channel utilizing the
linear quantization [2 marks]
(iv) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete designed system using
MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the encoding and decoding stage. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(v) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output
signal is the same as the analog input signal. [10 marks]

PART (B)

Prior to transmission, PCM signal in part (A) is being modulated using BPSK technique. At the receiver,
the signal is demodulated and then decoded to the original message signal.

(i) Calculate the bit rate, baud rate, minimum bandwidth and efficiency. [5 mark]
(ii) Simulate the complete designed system using MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must
include the transmitter and the receiver. Show the implementation of these values in your
simulation. [15 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output signal
is the same as the analog input signal. [10 marks]
(iv) Show the constellation diagram from the Matlab simulation. [5 marks]

PART (A)

(i) Design a linear PCM codebook for a system that allows input signal of 8 sin 2500 .The
system requires minimum dynamic range of at least 30 dB. Support your design with
calculations and state all your assumptions. Determine the minimum and maximum SQR. [5
marks]
(ii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete designed system (transmitter and
receiver) using MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the encoding and decoding
stage. Show the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output signal
is the same as the analog input signal. [10 marks]

PART (B)

Prior to transmission, PCM signal in part (A) is being modulated using FSK technique. At the receiver,
the signal is demodulated and then decoded to the original signal.

(i) State your choice carrier, mark and space frequency. [3 mark].
(ii) Calculate the bandwidth [2 marks]
(iii) Based on the values indicated above, simulate the complete designed system using
MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver. Show the
implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iv) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the receiver output signal
is the same as the transmitter input signal. [10 marks]

PART (A)

(i) Determine the modulation technique used to produce waveform R. Extract the
transmitted input bit stream. State your assumptions clearly. [2 marks]
(ii) Determine the bit rate, minimum bandwidth and bandwidth efficiency. [3 marks]
(iii) Using Matlab, design a complete PCM system (transmitter and receiver) that generate
digital bit stream at transmission bit rate as obtained in (ii). State all your design
parameters. [15 marks]
(i) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Shows that the input signal (at
TX) is the same as the output signal (at RX). [10 marks]

PART (B)

(i) The digital bit stream in Part (A) is digitally modulated using a technique as obtained in
Part A(i). Present the truth table and constellation diagram. Indicate your choice of
reference carrier frequency. [5 marks]
(ii) Based on the parameter values indicated above, simulate the complete designed system
using MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver.

PROJECT 10:

PART (A)

Analog input signal of 5cos 22000 is sampled, quantized and encoded to be transmitted over a
communication system. A company employs you to design a communication system, such that the
quantization distortion of any audio source does not exceed 5% of the peak-to-peak analog signal
voltage.

(i) Construct the PCM codebook that meets the system requirements. State the number of
bits per sample used and the resulting transmission bitrate. [5 marks]
(ii) Simulate your designed communication system by employing parameter values described
in part (i) above, using MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the encoding and
decoding stage. Show the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output
signal is the same as the analog input signal. [10 marks]

PART (B)

It was proposed that a modulation scheme is employed for the designed system. More specifically,
the PCM signal at the transmitter of part (A) above, is digitally modulated prior to transmission.

(i) If the bandwidth efficiency is the main criterion to choose a modulation method. Propose
a digital modulation technique to transmit the PCM signal in part (A) above. Justify your
choice of digital modulation technique. Present the design of your chosen digital
modulation technique using the block diagram and truth table. Indicate your choice of
reference carrier frequency. [5 marks]
(ii) Based on the parameter values indicated above, simulate the complete designed system
using MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver.
Show the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output

PROJECT 11:

PART (A)

We need to multiplex 4 input sources; 2 digital inputs with a bit rate of 120 kbps each and 2 analog
inputs with frequency of 6 kHz each. If the signal need to be sampled and quantized, assume that the
minimum SQR is 30dB.
(i) Calculate the output bit rate and dynamic range of the analog signal. Construct the PCM
codebook. [5 marks]
(ii) Design a PCM system for only ONE (1) analog input. Simulate your designed
communication system by employing parameter values described in part (i) above, using
MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation must include the encoding and decoding stage. Show
the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output
signal is the same as the analog input signal. [10 marks]

PART (B)

Design a suitable multiplexing system for all FOUR (4) input sources as stated in Part (A).

(i) Sketch your design, which include the block diagram, important parameters and total

using MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the transmitter and the receiver.
Show the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]

PROJECT 12:

PART (A)

Youre required to design a PCM-TDM system that multiplexes THREE (3) analog input signals and ONE
(1) digital input signal. The design must fulfill the following specifications:

Digital input signal: 19.2 kbps


Total transmission bit rate: 48 kbps
The minimum dynamic range of each channel is 35 dB

(i) Determine the message signal frequency, sampling frequency, the number of bit used and
output bit rate for each analog input signal. [5 marks]
(ii) Design a PCM system for only ONE (1) analog input. Simulate your designed communication
system by employing parameter values described in part (i) above, using MATLAB/Simulink.
The simulation must include the encoding and decoding stage. Show the implementation of
these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
(iii) Show the output waveforms at each stage of the system. Show that the decoder output signal
is the same as the analog input signal. [10 marks]

PART (B)

PROJECT 13:

PART (A)

A new TNB power plant has just been completed and you are assigned to design a time division
multiplexing system (TDM) for the communication requirement with the head-quarters in Bangsar.
The TDM system must carry TWO (2) voice channels, ONE (1) music channel and TWO (2) telemetry
channels. Each of the analog channels must be sampled at the Nyquist rate and uniformly quantized
such that the SQR is greater than 25 dB. The specifications for each input signal are as follows:

Voice channel: Bandlimited to 4 kHz


Music channel : Bandlimited to 8 kHz
Telemetry channel : Synchronous digital with 32 kbits/s

(i) Determine the sampling frequency, the number of bit used and output bit rate for each analog
input signal. [4 marks]
(ii) Calculate the total transmission bit rate. [1 mark]
(iii) Design a PCM system for only ONE (1) analog input. Simulate your designed communication
system by employing parameter values described in part (i) above, using MATLAB/Simulink.

PROJECT 14:

PART (A)

A telemetry system transmits FOUR (4) analog signals to the monitoring center. Each 5 kHz of the
analog signal is PCM quantized and transmitted to a monitoring center over wired communication
system. A company employs a consultant to design the telemetry system, such that has the minimum
dynamic range of 40 dB.

(i) Calculate the sampling rate, no of bit used and data rate for each input. State all
assumptions made for the design. [4 marks]
(ii) Find the total transmission bit rate. [1 marks]
(iii) Simulate your designed communication system by employing parameter values described
in part A(i), using MATLAB/Simulink. Your simulation must include the encoding and
decoding stage. Show the implementation of these values in your simulation. [15 marks]
