3.2MEASUREMENTMETHODOLOGY

ThestandardmethodusedonFUSRAPsitesfordeterminingthetotalporosityofsoilmaterialsisdescribed
inAppendixIIofDOA(1970).FurtherdiscussiononthismethodologyisalsopresentedinDanielsonand
Sutherland(1986).

Onthebasisofthedefinitionoftotalporosity,asoilsamplecouldbeevaluatedfortotalporositybydirectly
measuringtheporevolume(Vp)andthetotalvolume(Vt).Thetotalvolumeiseasilyobtainedbymeasuring
thetotalvolumeofthesample.Theporevolumecan,inprinciple,beevaluateddirectlybymeasuringthe
volumeofwaterneededtocompletelysaturatethesample.Inpractice,however,itisalwaysdifficultto
saturatethesoilsampleexactlyandcompletelyand,therefore,thetotalporosityofthesampleisrarely
evaluatedbyadirectmethod.Usually,thetotalporosityisevaluatedindirectlybyusingthefollowing
expression(DOA1970,AppendixIIDanielsonandSutherland1986):
whereptisgivenasadecimalfraction,Vsisthesoilparticlevolume,Vtisthetotalvolume,sisthesolid
phase(soilparticle)density,andbisthedrybulkdensityofthesample.(Equation3.2canbeobtainedby
rearrangingEquation2.3.)Underthisapproach,thevaluesofsandbareevaluatedbylaboratoryorinsitu
measurements(Section2.2)andarethenusedtocalculatethetotalporositypt.

4.1DEFINITION

Theeffectiveporosity,pe,alsocalledthekinematicporosity,ofaporousmediumisdefinedastheratioof
