2. Statement of Objective Students will be able to identify main ideas by using key details while reading
for Student the book, 100 People Who Made History.
3. Teacher Input Today we are going to learn about using key details to find the main idea in a
text.

Teacher will read 2-3 paragraphs about George Washington from 100 People minutes
Who Made History. After each paragraph, the teacher will ask two students,
What is a key detail from what we just read? The teacher will then ask,
Can someone tell me what the main idea of the paragraph is, based on the
details you came up with? What does the author want us to know?
4. Guided Practice
Teacher will ask guiding questions:
Why do you think that is important?
What makes you think that is the main idea?
5. Independent Practice Students will complete the Ice Cream Cone Details and Main Idea 5-10
worksheet. Students will list three key details from 100 People Who Made minutes
History about Augustus Caesar and decide what the main idea is based off of
their key details. When the students are finished, the teacher will begin a class
discussion on the students worksheet and what they wrote.
Students will complete the Ice Cream Cone Details and Main Idea worksheet (Attached).
