LESSON PLAN

Student Teaching Washington Elementary School

DATE/SESSION: 3/7/17 PSU STUDENT:

Clarissa Davis

Share Learning Goals:

#1 - Review Previous Days Lesson, Vocabulary and Key Terms
#2 - Use Manipulatives to Practice Translation, Reflection and
Rotation
#3 - Use Star Wars Themed Worksheet to Analyze Students
Understanding of Lesson

#1 - Objective/Evaluation/Common Core Standard:

TSW discuss previous days lesson of Translation, Reflection, and Rotation and
review key vocabulary words related to each category.
Strand: Mathematics OAS
Box Sub-Heading: Geometry
Standard:
2. GM. 1.2 Recognize Right Angles and classify angles as smaller or larger
than right angles
2. GM. 1.2 Describe, compare, and classify two dimensional figures according
to their geometric attributes.
2. GM. 1 Analyze attributes of two dimensional figures and develop
generalizations about their properties.

Materials:
Smart Board
White board
List of vocabulary words
Students Math Journals
Pencils
Dry Erase Marker
ELMO Projector

The Plan:
Anticipatory Set:
Review the previous days list of vocabulary words and key terms with the
students while they copy them down into their math journals.

Introduce the Lesson:

Who can remember the vocabulary words we talked about yesterday?
Show the physical motions of Sliding to the side for Translation and Turning
90 degrees for Rotation. Show some form of Reflection by flipping something
on its side.
Instruction:
Teaching the Lesson:
Write down each vocabulary word and definition on a white board with
a dry erase marker and project it onto the smart board with the ELMO.
Students will copy them down into their math journals and draw a
picture to match the definition.
Translation Slide / Reflection Flip / Rotation - Turn

Check for Understanding: Students picture will they draw in their math
journal will demonstrate the appropriate vocabulary word.

Guided Practice and/or Independent Practice Students will

independently choose an object to draw demonstrating the vocabulary
word.

Closure TSW do the guided practice without prompting from a

teacher or peer in regards to the vocabulary word and the definition.

Assessment/Evaluation:
Students may be randomly called on to share their picture with the
class on how they depicted the definition of the vocabulary words.

#2 - Objective/Evaluation/Common Core Standard:

TSW use manipulatives to demonstrate the positioning of each vocabulary
word
Strand: Mathematics OAS
Box Sub-Heading: Geometry
Standard:
2. GM. 1.2 Recognize Right Angles and classify angles as smaller or larger
than right angles
2. GM. 1.2 Describe, compare, and classify two dimensional figures according
to their geometric attributes.
2. GM. 1 Analyze attributes of two dimensional figures and develop
generalizations about their properties.

Materials:
Colored Macaroni
Colored Beans
Paper Cherries
Three Column Graph Chart for Dry Erase Pocket
Dry Erase Marker

The Plan:
Anticipatory Set: Students will use three different types of manipulatives to
practice the vocabulary words.

Introduce the Lesson:

Lets practice our vocabulary words using out manipulatives. Who can show
me what Translation/Reflection/Rotation looks like?

Instruction:
Teaching the Lesson:
Give each student 4 of each of the manipulatives. Have them label the
first column of the chart as the Starting Point. They will place one of
each of the manipulatives in the starting point to show what it looks
like normally. Next the students will label each column with a
vocabulary word and use the rest of the manipulatives to demonstrate
each of the vocabulary words.

Check for Understanding: Students will do each column on their own as

the teacher rotates around the room and observes their patterns.

Guided Practice and/or Independent Practice: Students will

independently fill the columns demonstrating each vocabulary word
with the manipulatives

Closure: Teacher will lead a discussion with the class on the objects and
why they placed each manipulative in the position they did.

Assessment/Evaluation: This final discussion on the positioning of the

manipulatives allows multiple students to say the vocabulary words aloud
and develop further discussions on how an object can be moved to
demonstrate it in a physical form.

#3 - Objective/Evaluation/Common Core Standard:

TSW demonstrate understanding of the vocabulary by doing a matching
worksheet on their own without teacher guidance.

Materials:
Slide, Flips and Turns with r2d2 worksheet
Scissors
Glue stick
Pencil
The Plan:
Anticipatory Set: Student will do Slides, Flips and Turns with r2d2 worksheet
on their own without guidance from peers or teachers.

Introduce the Lesson: Now that you guys have shown me how smart you are
working with manipulatives, now I want you to help r2d2 categorize his
friends.

Instruction:
Teaching the Lesson: Pass out the worksheet to each student and read
the directions out loud.

Check for Understanding: Students will follow the directions on their

own with little to no assistance from teacher or peers. Teacher will
observe students progress as they rotate around the room

Guided Practice and/or Independent Practice: Students will

independently start and finish worksheet on own.

Closure: Once Students are done with work sheet, they will put the
worksheet in the math box with their name at the top of the paper and
all pieces securely attached.

Assessment/Evaluation: This is a graded assignment to see if the student

understood the lesson, retained the vocabulary and could properly
demonstrate its meaning.
