Abstract

According to the text for class teaching is an exciting, rewarding and uplifting career (Parker

2014(1)6). Teaching involves creativity to help students of different learning abilities and styles

to learn. Children should enjoy the learning process. Helping a child with homework, playing

with them, listening to them makes them feel important and teaches about them to anyone

willing to take the time. Knowing a person wants to teach is not enough. A person must

understand what it takes to become a teacher.

Children are the future, a statement used often. The people who choose to work with

children for a career take the statement to heart. Teaching takes caring, patience, time and so

many more things the list would go on and on. Knowing a person wants to teach is not enough. A

person must understand what it takes to become a teacher. The first step on the path is to explore

the many options of teaching. What grade to teach? A specific subject? Which age or type of

children can the individual be the most help or get the most joy from being with? A college

degree is needed to become a teacher. Choosing the best college for a persons circumstances is

an important step to becoming a teacher. A person has to know what kind of teacher they want to

be able to decide what degree they will need. A good teacher should make every child feel

important. All children should feel like they are capable of learning, and hopefully enjoy

learning. Every child deserves to feel like someone care about them, someone is willing to listen

to them and be there for them. Children deserve good teachers.

Educational Programs

When pursuing a career in education a person should research the different programs for

achieving a teaching degree what can be done with the degree. According the Bureau of Labor

Statistics a student can pursue an associates degree, which is good for teaching pre-school. A

bachelors degree for teaching adult literacy and high school equivalent, career and tech

education, high school, kindergarten and elementary school, middle school and special

education. The other type of degree is a masters, which is used by instruction coordinators and

librarians. IUPUC is a local college with an educational program. At IUPUC to get a degree to

become a teacher for kindergarten through sixth grade a person needs to earn a bachelors

degree, receive a state issued certification or license and attend a colleges teacher preparation

program. The teacher preparation program will include classes in education and child psychology

in addition to the major. The programs typically include fieldwork, and a passed background

check. The Bachelors degree also requires supervised teaching experiences, minimum GPA,

certification test and a test to demonstrate knowledge. IUPUC offers specialties of English as a

new language, English/ Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Special

Education. IUPUCs program includes working with faculty experts, interacting with elementary

students in local schools and hands on experience, engaging in research projects with faculty

mentors, involvement in student clubs and organization. The coursework at IUPUC involves the

foundation of the present educational system. General education explores technology, research,

exploration of education trade books, multicultural and global awareness. Graduate is the

professional development workshop. Methods of social studies, reading, language arts and

mathematics, pluralistic society, lab/field experience and arts. Special education teaches

methods, technology, assessment, instruction, transition, individuals and families in school

society, management and behavior of classroom (iupuc.edu/academics/divisions-

programs/education/degree-programs/elementary-education).

Job Outlook1

Teaching is one of the largest professions in the United States (Parker 2013). The job

outlook for teaching is expected to grow six percent from 2014-2024. The number of students

and classes needed to accommodate students will rise. Older teachers will reach retirement age,

and increase the need to replace teachers who retire. The number of teachers needed to replace

retired teachers and the rise of classes and students will give rise to the number of teachers

needed. Employment growth will depend on state and local government budgets. Some places do

have a surplus of teachers, which will affect how many new teachers will be needed in the area.

Opportunities in urban and rural school districts are better (bls.gov/ooh/education-training-and-

library/kindergarten-and-elementary-school-teachers.htm). Public elementary and secondary

enrollment is projected to increase to fifty two million students by 2019-2020 school year. The

most high demand fields will be science, mathematics, bilingual and special education (Parkay,

2013). Average salary in 2010-2011 in Indiana was $54,491 annual for instructional staff and

$50,407 annual for classroom teachers. Salaries have increased steadily since the beginning of

the new century. Teaching has the fringe benefits of medical insurance and retirement plans

(Parkay, 2013).

Personality Traits of Teachers

Ali Eryilmaz wrote about a study for Educated Sciences in 2014 titled Perceived

Personality Traits and Types of Teachers and Their Relationships to the Subjective Well-being

and Academic Achievements of Adolescents. The study focused on the qualification for a

teachers relationships with the students, academic qualification and personality traits. The

personality traits found in a teacher to help children to learn are a teacher who is humble, polite,

friendly, eager to teach, fond of the job, warm, cheerful, well-balanced, have a creative and

flexible viewpoints, and high levels of cognitive proficiency and creativity. A teacher should be

conscientious, agreeable, open to experiences, have an extroverted personality and traits to yield

a positive education result (Eryilmaz, 2014). The public needs to be able to trust a teacher. A

teacher need to be competent, effective and accountable.

Conclusion

A teacher needs to show understanding and patience. A teacher needs to be able to

respectively talk to students, families, and other staff members. The responsibilities of teaching

include working during school hours, meeting with parents, students and other teachers before

and after school, spending time in the evenings and on weekends working on grading papers and

preparing lessons (http://www.bls.gov/ooh/education-training-and-library/kindergarten-and-

elementary-school-teachers.htm). I want to be a teacher because it is important to me every child

know how important he or she is. Children need to know someone cares about them. Someone

needs to help children to succeed. All students deserve a teacher who is willing to listen to what

they have to say and who is willing to take the time to see the qualities of each student and to

help others to see the qualities of each student. I am not only open to learn new things I love to

learn new things. Everyones viewpoints are important to me, I never what I will learn by

listening to someone until I have taken the time to listen. I am conscience about what I say

because I do not want to hurt or offend anyone. Getting to work with children has been a great

joy in my life and I want to continue but with more understanding of how to help them.
