Distance program smooths path to degree
By Emily Hadorn
When Kyle Hanan moved to Wisconsin, he’d been trying to complete
a bachelor’s degree for almost a decade, but it wasn’t until he decided
to go with distance learning that he got down to business, so to speak. Now, four
years later, he’s wrapping up the coursework for his business administration
degree and moving his business to Arizona.

“One of the reasons that [distance learning] appealed to me is that I have started at a couple different
universities, and had had to move, so that kind of threw a wrench into transferring credits over,” he
says. “I’d been searching and looking at reviews and was very impressed with what the University of
Wisconsin-Platteville had to offer in terms of distance learning.”

Most people have to wait to graduate with the degree before getting their own business, but Kyle bought his
business and started his degree within the same year.

“I was working as a junior accountant at a company in La Crosse and it just so happened my boss was running a
nutrition store nearby,” Kyle remembers. “He found out I had a background in nutrition and exercise, I
started working at the store, he saw how well I was doing, offered me the store, and I bought it.”

Kyle’s favorite class in the business program has been Human Resource Management. “I found that
human resources has become so powerful wherever you are, in whatever business, and knowing all those
little laws, I guess part of it appeals to me. I’ve also found it really helps a lot in running a business and
dealing with people who you work with. [The bachelor’s degree] is really something to fall back on, as running
your own business definitely has its up and downs,” Kyle says. “I’ve been really happy with the program.”

Agreement opens door for criminal justice

students in Southwest Wisconsin
By Christine Hawkinson

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College (Southwest Tech) criminal justice students

can now transfer their courses to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, thanks to an
agreement between the two schools.

A previous agreement allowed for the transfer of some general education coursework,
but due to differing course requirements, criminal justice courses were rarely accepted.
The new provision allows up to five Southwest Tech criminal justice courses to transfer
for students who complete the courses within 15 years of their application to UWP.

“We are excited to work more closely with Southwest Tech criminal justice graduates,”
according to Amy Nemmetz, program coordinator for the online undergraduate criminal
justice program at UWP. “The strong foundation and skills these graduates bring to the
UW-Platteville Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program will lead to additional
opportunities for them. UW-Platteville criminal justice graduates have obtained positions
with the FBI, DCI (Department of Criminal Investigations), Probation and Parole, Federal
Bureau of Prisons, and several other fascinating agencies.”

December Graduation 2009
It’s only a month away - the end of another semester and time to
celebrate the accomplishments of our newest group of distance
learning graduates! Commencement ceremonies are the most
celebrated events on campus.

If you are planning to graduate this fall and have not yet
completed the paperwork and submitted the associated fees,
contact your academic advisor immediately, as well as the
Distance Learning Center at 800.362.5460, to finalize your plans.

Candidates for graduation at the end of a summer session may attend

either the May or December ceremony and should inform the Distance
Learning Center which celebration they would like to participate in. We
strongly encourage all graduates and their families to attend and celebrate
the achievements of our new graduates.

We mailed information packets regarding the December 12 commencement

activities, including dates, times, and instructions to all students currently
scheduled for fall graduation. Please call me at the DLC to confirm your
attendance or if you have questions. We hope to see you there!
