In physics, a state of matter is one of the distinct forms that matter takes on. Four states
of matter are observable in everyday life: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. ... Matter in the
solid state maintains a fixed volume and shape, with component particles (atoms, molecules or
ions) close together and fixed into place.
The three states of matter are the three distinct physical
forms that matter can take in most environments: solid, liquid, and gas. In extreme
environments, other states may be present, such as plasma, Bose-Einstein condensates, and
neutron stars.
3. Gas
In a gas, the molecules have enough kinetic energy so that the effect of
intermolecular forces is small (or zero for an ideal gas), and the typical distance
between neighboring molecules is much greater than the molecular size. A gas
has no definite shape or volume, but occupies the entire container in which it is
confined.
4. Plasma
Like a gas, plasma does not have definite shape or volume.
The plasma state is often misunderstood, but it is actually quite common on
Earth, and the majority of people observe it on a regular basis without even
realizing it. Lightning, electric sparks, fluorescent lights, neon lights, plasma
televisions, some types of flame and the stars are all examples of illuminated
matter in the plasma state.

The Physical properties of matter can be observed and tested. They include properties
such as color, length, volume, odor, and density. These properties are extensive if they depend
on the amount of the substance being used or intensive if they do not depend on the amount of
substance being used.
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. If you are new to the idea of mass,
it is the amount of stuff in an object. It is all around you.

Two tall cylindrical beakers, water, food coloring, 2 salsa containers, a short piece of
metal chain.
Procedures
Two tall beakers, A and B, are filled with hot water (3/4 full
only).
Ice chunks are taken out of the salsa containers and carefully placed in the tall beakers:
The ice with chain in Beaker A; the ice without chain in Beaker B.
