Course Description:
Limits, continuity, differential and integral calculus of functions of one variable.

Course Competencies:
1. Analyze the behavior and continuity of functions using limits.
2. State the definition and explain the significance of the derivative.
3. Compute the derivative using the definition and associated formulas for differentiation.
4. Solve application problems using differentiation.
5. State and explain the significance of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
6. Compute anti-derivatives, indefinite and definite integrals of elementary functions.
7. Read and interpret qualitative information when presented numerically, analytically or graphically.
8. Compare alternate solution strategies, including technology.
9. Justify and interpret solutions to application problems.
10. Communicate processes and results in written and verbal formats.

Attendance:
Students are required to attend class on a daily basis. Any student who misses six (6) or more classes may
be withdrawn from the class. If you stop attending class you will earn a grade of an F, unless you fill out
the necessary paper work for a withdrawal.

Homework:
Homework will be given daily; these problems will be from your textbook. Cumulatively, homework will
count for 10% of your overall grade. Absolutely no make-up homework will be allowed, so if you are not
in class to turn in your homework then you will get a ZERO for that particular homework assignment! I
will not accept homework that is placed under my office door or in my mailbox, you must personally hand
me your homework or have made other arrangements with me prior to the beginning of class.

Quizzes/Exams:
There will be three (3) quizzes during the semester, the combined score of these three quizzes will count
as one exam. In addition, there will be four (4) exams during this grading period. Cumulatively, these
quizzes and exams will count for 70% of your overall grade. There will be absolutely no make-up quizzes
or exams. If you miss a quiz or exam, your score on the final exam will replace the missing quiz or exam
score. In addition, there will be a comprehensive final exam on 12/16/15. The time of the final will be
from 12:00 to 1:50 p.m. The final exam will count for 20% of your overall grade. The final exam will not
be given early and may not be made up. If you do not take the final exam, then you will get an F in the
class.
Academic Misconduct:
If it is determined that you did not do your own work on an exam you will receive 0% as your grade for
that exam. You are expected to adhere to the standards outlined in the Mesa Community College Student
Handbook. Severe violations of this code such as cheating, plagiarism, or aggressive behavior will not be
tolerated, and you will be dropped from the course.

Calculators:
Graphing calculators are required for this class and you are encouraged to get a Texas Instruments
graphing calculator. I recommend a TI-83 or TI-84. Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that
do symbolic algebra, such as the TI-89, TI-92, Casio FX2, or Casio 9970Gs are not permitted.

Grades:
Your semester grade will be based on a straight 10% scale.
A (90% - 100%), B (80% - 89%), C (70% - 79%), D (60% - 69%), F (0% 59%)

Special Assistance:
If you have any disabilities, which may hinder your learning the material presented, please inform me and
complete the appropriate paperwork with Special Services as soon as possible. I will do everything
reasonably possible to help you be successful in learning the material in this class.

MCC Early Alert Program (EARS):

Mesa Community College is committed to the success of all our students. Numerous campus support
services are available throughout your academic journey to assist you in achieving your educational
goals. MCC has adopted an Early Alert Referral System (EARS) as part of a student success initiative to
aid students in their educational pursuits. Faculty and Staff participate by alerting and referring students
to campus services for added support. Students may receive a follow up call from various campus
services as a result of being referred to EARS. Students are encouraged to participate, but these services
are optional.

Early Alert Web Page with Campus Resource Information can be located at:
http://www.mesacc.edu/students/ears

General Remarks:
Please present your work in a neat and easily followed format. Use scratch paper when appropriate.
Your work is the justification for your answer. No credit should be expected for nonexistent,
incoherent or incorrect work regardless of the answer.
You should attend each class period and be prepared to learn new material. Stay current do not get
behind.
Work with other students from the class. Get extra help when you need it.
Course schedules, assignments and exam dates are subject to change as circumstances dictate.
