OSSET-BALKAR ETH N O G R A PH IC PARALLELS

A p a rt of the P olovs routed by the M ongols in the X III and XIV centuries found
sh elter in the C en tral C au casu s m o u n tain s occupied at th a t tim e by the Alans. A ccording
to folk legends recorded alread y in 1880-ies by Vs. M iller and M. K ovalevsky but fully
published for the first tim e only in the p resen t article the se ttlin g of the Polov people
(a p a rt of w hom becam e one of the an cesto rs of the B alk a rs and the K arachays) took
place in a w estw ard direction, i. e. from the Tcherek to the B aksan ravine. The legends
m ention a stru g g le of the new ly a rriv in g T urkic-speaking tribes w ith the indigenous
A lan tribes w ho w ere ousted by them from their place of h abitation. A fter m ixing with
the P olovs the A lans did n o t a t once become, am alg am ated w ith them but co-existed
w ith them for a long period of time. At an y ra te com plete assim ilation of the A lans with
the new ly settled T urkic trib es did n o t take place before the XVI century. Those of the-
A lans w ho adopted a T urkic la n g u a g e from the an cesto rs of the B alkars and the K a ra
chays tra n sm itte d to them , in their tu rn , m any featu res of their culture. As is show n by
our field d ata, an A lan su b stratu m can be clearly traced in the economy, m aterial and
in tellectu al culture in early relig io n s beliefs of the B alkars and the K arachays. O sset-
B alkar p a rallels are noted in tra d itio n a l ag ricu ltu ral im plem ents, in the processing of
m ilk products, in food and drink, in the architecture of defence build in g s and dw ellings,
in fam ily ritu a l, etc.
