Precis of Teaching the Writing Process in Primary Grades One Teacher’s Approach
Linda Martin and Shirley Thacker present their journey fo implement a successful writing -
program by creating a literacy and language rich environment. The teacher questioned whether
her first graders could fully engage in the writing process so she set out to develop a program to
find out. The first step in the process was to establish the environment and routines, The
procedures and the writing process had to be taught, Students developed topics, plans, edit, and
publish their writing. As students work through the writing process, they are allowed to make
choices about their writings; the topics become their choice, they decide which pieces they want
to continue with and complete, and decide who to parmer with for editing and sharing. Thacker
discovered that her young students were able to not only complete the steps in the writing
process, but meaningfully participate in conferences and reflections about theit work. Her
students demonstrated to her that primary level students are capable of successfully working
through the writing process collaboratively, independently, and meaningfully.
