Dear Ms. Thoyer:

My name is Jennifer Rodriguez. I have been accepted into the Fresh Inc. Festival in Kenosha,

music performances side-by-side with the Fifth House Ensemble, premiering 16 new works of
chamber music, and working with guest experts in the field of graphic art, marketing, theater
direction, and composition for an overall entrepreneurial experience. The festival is June 4-18,
2017 and is held at University of Wisconsin-Parkside. I am applying for a Friends of Flutes Inc.
grant to help fulfill my financial needs to attend this festival.

Attached, I have provided a proposal detailing the Fresh Inc. Festival experience, along with my
resume, verification of my enrollment at Ball State University, and proof of acceptance into the
program with additional scholarship. My letter of recommendation will be provided separately
by Dr. Mihoko Watanabe, my current flute professor. Thank you for considering my grant
proposal for the Fresh Inc. Festival. If any questions arise, please feel free to contact me at any
time either by my provided email or phone number. I look forward to hearing back in the near
future.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Rodriguez

FRIENDS OF FLUTES FOUNDATION
GRANT PROPOSAL

Eligibility
I am an eligible candidate applying to receive the Friends of Flutes Foundation grant. I am a graduate of
Dundee Crown High School, class of 2013 in Carpentersville, IL. As well, I am expected to graduate from
Ball State University in December 2017 with a Bachelors of Science in Music Education, currently
studying with Dr. Mihoko Watanabe. My primary instrument is the flute, and after graduating I plan to
teach privately as well as utilize my education degree by teaching in the public school system. Over a few
years, I plan to return to college to study flute performance and form a chamber ensemble as well as
continue my career with the non-for-profit, Music for the Sake of Music, in Green Bay Wisconsin. The
project I am interested in participating in is Fresh Inc. Festival located at the University of Wisconsin-
Parkside in Kenosha, WI. The festival will take place June 4-18.

Project Description
The Fresh Inc. Festival is a 14 day program comprised of experimental and entrepreneurial workshops
aimed at fostering a sustainable life through business in the arts. The festival also includes one-on-one
mentorship with instrument and composition faculty, premiering 16 new works of chamber music,
performing added established repertoire, and designing and presenting 11 performance experiences
through side-by-side performances with the Fifth House Ensemble. The Fifth House Ensemble is the
primary chamber ensemble running the Fresh Inc. Festival. They are a Chicago based chamber group
which works to creates connections between the arts throughout an array of venues and social
environments. Collaborating with theaters, visual artists, animators, folk musicians, astronomers, and
more, the Fifth House Ensemble is a modern day representation of striving to keep the arts relevant and
integrated into society. The flutist and executive director associated with the Fifth House Ensemble is
Melissa Snoza, a graduate from Northwestern University and Eastman School of Music, and current
Adjunct Professor of Flute at Carthage College, faculty at DePaul University, and private flute instructor
from home. Other faculty include the following:
Grace Hong, Oboe
Elizandro Garcio-Montoya, Clarinet
Eric Heidbreder, Bassoon
Parker Nelson, Horn
Charlene Kluegel, Violin
Michael Lieberman, Viola
Herine Coetzee Koschak, Cello
Eric Snoza, Bass
Katherine Petersen, Piano

Along with working alongside these professional musicians, participants will also work with guest
experts in the field of graphic art, marketing, theater direction, and composition.

Professional Aim
Currently in my degree, I have taken it upon myself to create an integrative arts recital called The Musical
Palette which allows me to interact with other artistic fields such as photography, digital art, drawing, silk
screening, and composition through my flute performance. Working on this project has instilled a passion
in me for both chamber music and arts integration. After graduating, I plan to pursue chamber music and
use my education degree to help benefit students both in public schools, private schools, and throughout
the community in various stages of life. I hope for my chamber group to present in a variety of schools
and teach the connections that lie between the musical arts, history, literature, and visual arts. As well, I
currently work at a non-for-profit called Music For the Sake of Music (MFtSoM) as assistant flute
instructor, which provides free private lessons for two weeks over the summer to middle school aged
students in the Green Bay, WI area. Through attending the Fresh Inc. Festival, I will not only gain the
entrepreneurial and business centered education necessary to run my own chamber ensemble, but I will
also gain education and integrative tools that I can also bring back to MFtSoM to further assist in class
creation and community interaction.

Statement of Need
I am requesting assistance in the amount of $1,568.70 to fulfill payment for this program. I have received
a scholarship of $500 from the Fresh Inc. Festival. Being a full-time student, I am securing a great
education, but do not currently have time to pursue a part time job, seeing as all of my attention is going
into my degree. Acquiring this financial assistance at this point in my career would be extremely
beneficial to my musical and educational growth, seeing as this is the last summer I will have off before
graduating college and pursuing my intended career in music education and performance.
