Task 1: Brainstorm on social issues
Task 2: Research on other action videos
Task 3: Research on own video
Task 4: contact details and angle for own production

Task 1:
(this should have been done in the idea process you now need to write it down
for example you looked into an issue and didnt like it, or your realized it was too
difficult these ideas need to be noted now)

Your brainstorms should cover:

The issue
The effect the issue has on community
How easy it would be to cover the social issue
What has been done to cover this issue before
Rough idea on who you can interview

Idea 1:
Preventing Homelessness in Reading

Reading has a growing issue of homelessness, with drinking and drug problems
causing the growth of people living on the streets. Launchpad in Reading is an
organization that helps people living on the streets and helping prevent them
going back to homelessness. By tackling alcoholism and drug abuse, people that
have this issue can be helped into recovering and starting their life again. Not
every person that has beco@<jme homeless is there due to alcohol and drugs;
many people are there due to financial problems. Giving support to these people
can help them get back on their feet.

Idea 2:
Parasol Project

The Parasol Project is an Oxford based charity committed to redressing the

balance for disabled and disadvantaged children and young people experiencing,
or at risk of, social exclusion.

Parasol recruits and trains a team of Enablers who support disabled children into
mainstream play schemes within Oxford city during the school holidays.

Who also run out own inclusive teenage activities for disabled and non-disabled
young people during term time and school holidays.

Idea 3:
Scullers caf
Scullers Caf is a rowing club nonprofit caf that works with disadvantaged
teenagers and young adults to give them a career path. By employing them and
helping them develop, these people can find a job that is great for them. There is
not enough done to help disadvantaged people.

Task 2:

Social Action Video 1

https://youtu.be/jzow_w32zvc

This video is showing the work a disability action center does to help people less
fortunate than we are. They are showing people with disabilities that are being
helped in their everyday lives to achieve the full potential from their experience.
This video is like our video, as we are also covering the topic of people with
disabilities and the effect it has on them. The similarities that the video has is the
structure, as we intend to follow the structure of interviews and found footage
used.

There is no lead presenter throughout the social action, as there is mainly a

narrator that comment on certain characteristics or interviews, which allow the
audience to follow what is going on. This is different to our social action, as we will
ensure we use ensure we have a presenter which will allow the story to progress
further and give the audience more understanding into what is going on.

The interviews are mainly carried out formally, which is a technique we intend to
use in our social action video, as the person being interview will be looking at the
camera presenting the fact they are speaking directly to the camera.

Cut-a-ways are not majorly used in the social action example, which is one
difference compared to our video, as cut-a-ways will be a main feature to make
the video more interesting and unique for the audience.

Found footage is not used in the video example much either, as the main footage
used is actual footage that has been recorded by the production. This is different
to our social action video, as we will be using found footage as a main technique
to captivate the audience and show them past and historical context that link to
our social action video.
Social Action Video 2

https://youtu.be/LCa02lgV0I0

This is a good example of a social action video, as there are many different
techniques that have been used to make it interesting and captivating for the
audience. These various techniques have meant that the social action video can
become more popular due to the entertainment of it, which can ensure that it
effectively delivers the appropriate message for the audience in the best format.

There is a main style in the social action video that is present throughout, as it is
mainly based around the fact of being an informative piece of work. This can be
clearly identified, as the narrator often talks about facts and statics which may
not been known already, this gives the audience further information that they
may not know already. Another style that is used in the social action video is the
use of pulling of the heartstrings, as they use strong storylines that can relate to
the audience and can affect them emotionally with music and effects. This will be
similar to our video, as we will try to pull at the heartstrings, so people will be
more emotionally connected to what they are watching.

Interviews are a main technique that has been used in this particular social action
video, as they ensure the audience get to see various different sides of the people
with disabilities and paint them in the best light, to ensure people do not have a
typical stereotype of them. The interviewee is mainly made to be the focus, as the
camera focusses solely on the person so the audience feel more connected with
them. The person asking the questions in the social action is never seen
throughout the production, which is a technique we will be using in our video. This
will be done to try to make the video appear as professional as possible to make it
successful.

Cut-a-ways are another technique that are used in this social action video, as the
interviews often cut back to various different scenes which show what they are
talking about. These cut-a-ways are often vital in captivating the audience, as
they can make the video more interesting by using different views that are better
than one singular interview view. We will be using these cut-a-ways in our video to
ensure that we use multiple views to change audiences views and make the
video more successful.

Found footage is used slightly in this social action video, a sit can be used to show
period things that have happened, which can make the video more interesting.
Overall found footage is not used that much, as interviews are the main device
used. We will be using found footage slightly also, due to show period events that
have happened, which will help back up points that we will talk about.

Task 3:
Your research should focus on:

Background on the Social issue itself:

Teenagers and young adults with learning difficulties have a hard time trying to
find a sustainable career path. Scullers description of their caf is this:

The Scullers Caf CIC is a Social Enterprise providing a real working experience
for young adults with learning disabilities.

We are looking to provide training for many Pathways students, and our aim is for
the students to work as valued volunteers in the Caf.

Because of the nature of our Caf the service may sometimes be a little slower
than at other venues. We ask for your patience in this worthwhile enterprise.

Any profits made are used to help create more opportunities for those we
support.

Is there already a social action group to try and prevent the issue? Yes / No

If there is: Who is involved with the group? What effects has the group had on
the community? How has it helped certain individuals? Does it already have an
action video to help its cause? (up load these if there are)

Are there any famous people involved in trying to prevent the situation?

As of writing this, I could not find any celebrities that back charities that help
disadvantaged young adults. Giving exposure to the issue could help and change
this, making people with influence believe in the cause.

Is there government backing to prevent the situation? Should there be? What
could they do?

The government is doing something to help the situation but most people see it
as not enough.

How does the issue effect the community / nation / world?

At the moment the charity is on a small scale, with many other charities doing the
same thing helping the community around them. With the right exposure, the
issue could resolve the national or even global issue that the country and or world
has.
Look at statistics on the social issue

What can be done to prevent the issue from happening?

There could be many aspects that could be done to prevent this issue from
getting any bigger. A main prospect that is needed to allow people with disabilities
to live a normal life would be to give them life skills that could be vital in them
gaining confidence and allowing them to gain stability. The work needs to be a
local and national change, which will help the message get successfully delivered
for the audience to have strong emotional connection with. This motive need to
allow employers to see the change that they could make, and enforce them to
make a change and help people less fortunate than ourselves.

Task 4
Contact details and angle

Informative, educational or change of attitude?

Discuss why and how you will achieve this.

Our social action is mainly going to be an informative piece, that will give the
audience key ideas that will help them get rid of typical stereotypes they may
have. It is also going to be education, as the information will teach the audience
not to judge people from how they look or their abilities and to be more accepting
of the people around us. Its also going to change attitudes majorly, as it will raise
awareness of aspects that need to be discussed to make the charity greater and
more effective in their work.

What ethical issues will you have to overcome or be careful documenting?

There may be several ethical issues that may arise when filming, as some people
with disabilities may object to being in the video, and some of the parents may
not want their child in the production. Therefore, we need to ensure we are
written permission from parents and people being interviewed to make sure
people are happy with being in the social action video

List of social action groups you could interview. Can you follow a volunteer or
member of the project?
Scope
Disability Groups UK
Marlow Scullers Cafe

Members of the people at the charity will be vital in trying to ensure that we get
the most from what we are attempting to find out. They could be important
people to get information from, to get an opinion and information from an
organization outside of Marlow and cover a huge range of aspects, looking after
thousands of people.

Disability discrimination. The Equality Act 2010 makes it unlawful to

discriminate against employees (including workers) because of a mental or
physical disability.

Under the Equality Act 2010 a person is disabled if they have a physical or
mental impairment which has a substantially adverse and long-term effect on
their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. In the workplace such
activities are taken to include things like using a telephone or computer,
interacting with colleagues, following instructions, driving and carrying
everyday objects.

The Equality Act 2010 provides disabled people with protection from
discrimination in a range of areas, including employment.

There are 4 main types of discrimination; direct, indirect, harassment and

victimisation, which can severely effect people with disabilities more

An employer whos recruiting staff may make limited enquiries about your
health or disability.
What shots / cut a ways / footage will you need to film in order for the social
action video to have impact?

Will be using close ups, long shot and mid shot as the main camera technique
that will be used throughout the entire social action video. I will try to ensure
that I use a variety of different camera angles to make sure the audience are
entertained by what they are actually watching, which will ensure that the
video becomes successful and gives the audience the appropriate message.
