Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Introduction
! Hello, all. First of all, we want to introduce ourself. Our group is consist of 4 persons, there
are Dinda Nadhila Agusta, Ghefira Rahma Tsurayya, Kiftia Chairunnisa and Sarah Yuniar
Puteri. Our topic for this english project are the "Easter Island". Easter Island is an island that is
located in the southeastern pasific ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle,
but still the region of Chile.

The picture above is showing us about moai or a large sculptures of stone that is known
as a symbol of Easter Island

! We choose that as our project topic because we think not all people have known about
Easter Island and that claimed to be the most remote inhabited island in the world. Another reason we
choose this topic is because we are interested in. We think that Easter Island is an unique, beautiful,
full of mystery, and historical island. No wonder if this island is also in the list of UNESCO World
Heritage Sites. Anyway, we will do some surveys too to find out what people have known about Easter
Island. The surveys method that we are going to use are questionnaire (as the offline survey) and
online interview (via chat, social networking, etc).
! We also have division of tasks in this project in order to be faster and slighter. First, Dinda
will do the survey. Second, Ghefira will make a presentation and search for additional information
about the topic. Third, Kiftia will looking for picture of Easter Island and the source of it, then make a
conclusion. And the last, Sarah will write the summary of this project and also write the final report
text.
! Our purpose of doing and making this project is to find out what people know about Easter
Island. And after that, we write some articles to let them know more about this amazing island, Easter
Island.
! And in order the process of do this english project is more organized and can be done on
time, so we made an investigation scenario or work plan.On29th October - 4th November, our first
action is search for the information about Easter Island and the deadline will be on 4th November.
The summary's sources deadline on 9th November. The next day we do the surveys. 10th
Novemberwe will do the questionnaire survey, and11th - 12th novemberwe'll do the online interview.
The surveys deadline will be on 13th October. Next step is to making the surveys analysis, on14th - 18th
November, the deadline ison 18th November. Then we will making a conclusion of all on19th - 20th
November.On 20th Novemberis the conclusion deadline and we'll start to make a finishing of this
project. We hope that all goes according to our target. Hopefully,after we make this project, people
will be know more about the Easter Island and how wonderful it is.

1st Summary : Dindas Summary

! Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui or Isla de Pascua), is an island thats
located over 2,000 miles near Chile Tahiti. Easter Island is famous for its giant stone
sculpture called Moai. The early inhabitants called Easter Island as Te Pito O Te Henua, or
in english Navel of the world. Easter Island came from Admiral Roggeven, who came to the
island on Easter Day in 1722.

! The land, the people, and the language are called Rapa Nui. Thor Heyerdahl said that
the moai builders are Peruvians, since theres a similarity between Moai and Incan stonework.
Some people said that Easter Island is a lost continent, or a result of an extra-terrestrial
influence.

! From archaelogical point of view, the discoverer of Easter Island is polynesians at


about 400 AD. Other culture of Easter Island are Rongorongo script (written in oceania
language), petroglyphs (rock carvings), wood carvings, tappa (bark cloth) crafts, tattoo, string
figures, dance, and music.

! The population of Easter Island were 10,000 people, far from the small islands
ecosystem capabilities. Bloody civil wars and cannibalism began, and the population of Easter
Island were decreasing. Contact with the western people made the people became even less
(110 people) because the disease that were spreading.

2nd Summary : Ghefiras Summary

Easter Island is an island that belongs to Chile, it is located in the southern Pacific Ocean.
Although the distance is 3515 miles off the west coast of Chile, administratively it included in
the province of Valparaiso.The most nearby inhabited island is Pitcairn, the distances about
2075 miles to the west. Area of !!Easter Island is 163.6 km . According to the census in 2002,
the population amounted to 3791 souls, majority of them settled in the capital city of Easter
Island, Hanga Roa.

! Human history of the island was begins with the arrival of the Polynesians around 400
AD, which is come from Mangareva or Pitcairn Island in the west. These Polynesian brought
bananas, taro, sweet potato, sugarcane, paper mulberry and chickens and started the new
relatively advanced and complex civilization.

! An Experts navigator from dutch, Jakob Roggeveen was discovered the island on
Easter Sunday in 1722. Roggeveen estimated around 2,000-3,000 people inhabit the island,
but actually the population was 10000-15000, that is inhabitants in the 16th century and 17.
The civilization of Easter Island has been declined drastically a 100 years before the arrival of
the Dutch,it caused of the overpopulation, deforestation and exploitation of natural resources
that are very limited in this isolated island.

! You have to know that the name "Rapa Nui" Easter Island isn't the original name that
was given by the Rapanui tribe.The name was created by the immigrant that is a workers from
Rapa in the Bass Islands, they create it to remains them of their home.

The cultural artifacts

1. Ahu Tahai
A ceremonial platform. Its located at Tahai, near a canoe ramp made of rounded beach stones
and is thought to be among the earliest ahu structures on the island, dating from 690 AD. And
it was restored by the American archaeologist William Mulloy.
2. Rano Raraku
Moai statues were made from the volcanic rock called "Rano Raraku", this rock can be found
in the mountain quarry and are scattered across its slopes. It was made by using various stages
of completion.
3. Rano Kau
The summit of this volcano (400m) offers panoramic views of the island's solitude in the
South Pacific.
4. Ahu Tongariki
This is a place for the 15 island's famous moai statues, they stand in a military lineup upon a
flat rock platform.
5. Orongo
This lake-filled crater is filled with remnants of the Birdman cult practiced until 1867.

3rd Summary : Kiftias Summary


Location
Easter Island is the most isolated inhabited island in the world. From West, this Island nearest
with pitcairn island(2,075km). With less than 100 inhabitants. The Island is about 24.6 km
long by 12.3 km at widest point. Its overall shape is triangular. With area 163.6 square km. In
this Island there are three Rano (Freshwater creater lakes),at Rano Kau, Rano Raraku and
Rano Aroi, near the summit of tereveka but no permanent river.

Culture.
There are three culture in Easter Island there are:
a. Moai
b. Petroglyphs
c. Rongorongo

a. Moai
Moai is the large stone statue. Moai make easter island famous in the world. 887 monolithic
stone statue have been collections on museum in this island. We know Easter Island
identified as Easter Island Heads but most of them ending at the top of thighs. Some
upright moai have become buried up to their necks by shifting soils. 95% moai were carved
out of distinctive, compressed, easily worked solidfield volcanic ash at a single site inside the
extinct volcano Rano Raraku.

b. Petroglyphs
Easter Island has one of the richest collections in all polynesia. Designs and images were
carved out of rock for variety of reasons:
1.To crate totems !
2. To mark territory a person or event.

c. Rongorongo
Is an clear script. Glyphs include pictographic&geometric shapes. It was first reported by a
French missionary,Eugene Eyraud, in 1864. At that time,several islanders said they could
understand the writing. But according to tradition. There are only a couple similarities with
the petroglyphs on the Island.

History
First occupied in Easter Island is Polynesian descendants come from Mangareva or Pitcairn
Island. These Polynesians inhabitants brought bananas, taro, sweet, potatoes, sugarcane,
mulberrypaper and chicken. At the same time,ecperts Dutch navigator Jakob Roggeveen
discoveredthe Island on Sunday in 1722. Roggeeen estimated arround 2,000-3,000 people
inhabit in this island, but it turned out to be a population of 10,000-15,000 inhabitants in the
16th century&17th. 20years later,deportation to Peru, Chile and other diseases brought by
Westerners almost wiping out the entire population with only 111 residents on 1877. The name
of Rapa Nui is not the original name of Easter Island, but the name was created by
immigrant workers from indigenous Rapa in the Bass Island. Rapa Nui replaced by Te Pito O
Te Hanua (Puser World) because of its isolation,but also taken from another location,
possibly from a building in the Marquesas.

4th Summary : Sarahs Summary


! Easter Island is one of the most isolated island in the world. Rapa Nui or Easter Island
its a polynesian island positioned in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 3,510 km (2,180 mi)
west of continental Chile.
! According to the archeologist, the early inhabitants arrived between 700-1000, and
they traveled here in canoes or from the Marquesas Island of Polynesia. The people began
carving giant statues out of volcanic rock called moai that established along the coast so that
they can oversee their descendants spirit world in the sea. Then its history tells that on Easter
Sunday, 1722, Dutch navigator Jacob Roggeveeen arrived, named it Easter Island. He later
Reported the island was lined with massive stone statues.
" In subsequent years, many people come to Easter Island and reported that there are
many statues. And then, half of the population of the island was captured and the robbers
deadly smallpox spread throughout the island. In the following year occurred great
confrontations between natives and settlers and because of insolvable disputes, by the end of
the decade only 100 people lived on the island, and much of its cultural knowledge had been
lost.
! Easter Island was approved by chile on septrember 9, 1888. An airport was
constructed in this island in 1995 by the managed of Chilean Navy. The Chile declared Easter
Island as province, and the Rapa Nui people given a Children citizenship.

a. People
! The 1992 census shows a resident population is 2,770 a third of this figure are
temporary residents and the remainder are native Rapanui. The commonly used language in
this island is spanish. But because the importance of tourism and the outsider born, they are
many who speak english, french, germany.

b. Citizens
! Citizens that owned by the Rapanui Chilean is citizenship. They are many who attend
Conti although often found differences between Chile and Rapanui. Religion in force on the
island is Roman Catholic and apostolic, and theres also a small congregation mormon.
c. Lifestyle
! The life in this island is informal. But people shake hands when meeting each other or
giving a strong hug that called abrazion. All building is still Chilean style. The main food of
this island is seafood. The road is unpaved and passed by several hundred of vehicles. Rapanui
customs include dancing, wood craving and some artist working on some grphic arts.

d. Education
! The liceo lorenzo baeza vega now offers some education step that running thirteen
years. From last two years, the liceo administers the national examination. All student are
expected to attend basic education, with some few going on to higher studies, and there are
some government scholarship for Rapanui students there.

e. Labour
! The available labor is little. The most constant sources of employment are through the
Chilean public service and tourism. However remains the problem of unemployment for most
of.

f. Wages
! In 1993, a worker of government might expect $240, while someone employed
privately might expect $560. Local labour typically will balance income against cost of living.

g. Health
! The standard of health on Rapanui is higher than in the rest of Chile, with no
efectionous diseases of South America nor of the tropic. To care for this population, theres a
small hospital that erected in1976 and have a doctor, dentist, midwife, nurse, and auxilary staff
with ambulance. Travelers should take their own requirements because theres no chemist on
the island except the hospital dispensary whose supplies from Chile.
Final Summarys

! Easter Island (Polynesian: Rapa Nui; Spanish: Isla de Pascua) is an island that belongs
to Chile. The name "Easter Island" was given by the Dutch explorer who discovered it.

! It is located in the South Pacific between Chile and Tahiti. Easter Island is one of the
most isolated inhabited islands in the world. The triangular-shaped island covers only 64
square miles and was formed out of an ancient volcanic eruption.

! Easter Island was discovered by Jakob Roggeveen (an experts navigator from Dutch)
on Easter Sunday in 1722, it was approved by Chile on September 9th, 1888. Easter Island
called as one of the most isolated inhabited islands in the world because, the civilization of
Easter Island has already degenerated drastically during the 100 years before the arrival of the
Dutch, owing to the overpopulation, deforestation and exploitation of the extremely isolated
island with its limited natural resources.

! The statues are moved by pulling the statues with the ropes. But, theres another
theory tells that, some people believe the statues are moved by rolling it on palm trees trunks.

CONCLUSION
Conclusion
After weve done surveys of 50 students (25 from 49 jhs and the rest are from other school),
now we can concluded that most of them still dont know about Easter Island, and only a few
of them have known about it. We can also concluded that most of them not really interested to
visits Easter Island, whereas Easter Island is a great place to visits.

So in this project were hoping that for those who dont know about Easter Island will become
know about it after reading this report text, and for those who not really interested to visits
Easter Island will know and want to visits someday.
