CALCULATING RESPONSE OF SILT CURTAIN

VIVEK SAMBANGI(12NA30023)
2

INTRODUCTION

A silt curtain is either a permeable structure that sits suspended in the water column to
control migrating sediments.

Also known as a turbidity curtain or silt screen, the silt curtains function is to contain
disturbed sediment.
3

INTRODUCTION
This allows suspended sediment to settle and drop within the water column by
controlling dispersion.

A silt curtain provides the necessary environment and time for the suspended sediment
to settle to the bottom.

METHODOLOGY
Assumptions:

The silt is considered to be floating on the free surface

and deployed in shallow and relatively calm water.
1 2
The silt curtain is considered as a porous medium.

Ballast of the silt is fixed to the bottom.

METHODOLOGY

Boundary conditions:

Free surface boundary condition:

from bernoulis equation:

at y = 0

Bottom boundary condition:

at y = -h

Dynamic condition:

where f(x,t) =
ms. = mass of the curtain
T = tensile force

Where k: wave number

G : porous coefficient
8

METHODOLOGY
The velocity potential is expanded using Eigen function expansion method

let

at x = 0
9

METHODOLOGY
Substituting velocity potential in dynamic equation

as the above condition is at free surface is function of y,t

and can be written as

METHODOLOGY
Substituting in

Finally from the dynamic condition

By solving from the above equation the response will be obtained.
