INTRODUCTION

1.1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The effect of Christianity in the society * a case study of the

salvation ministries, in Port Harcourt monopolies, in Port

Harcourt local government area of Rivers state. The study of

this researched is to expose on how the society will be better

and benefit, if they embrace the gospel in their cultural

environment, despise the challenges that will arise at the initial

stage. On the need to consider from Wikipedia, the free

encyclopedia.

A society is a group of people involved in persistent society

integration or a large social grouping sharing the same

geographical or social territory subject to the same political

authority and dominant cultural expectation, societies are

characterized by partners of relationships social relations

(between individuals who share a distinction culture and

institution a given society may be described as the sun total of

such relationships among its constituent members. In these

social sciences a large society often evinces stratification or

dominance patterns in subgroups.

16
1.1.2

Insofar as is collaborative, a society can enable its members to

benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an

individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits

can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.

Society can also consist of illumined people governed by their

own norms and valves within a dominant, larger society. This is

sometimes referred to as a subculture a term used extensively

within criminology.

1.1.3

More broadly, and especially within structuralism, a society

may be illustrated as an economic social industrial or cultural

infrastructure made up of, yet distinct from, a varied collection

of individual in this regard society can mean the objective

relationships people have with the material world other

people beyond the individual and their familiar social

environment.

From Wikipedia the encyclopedia.

17
1.1.4

Meanwhile, this researchers desire to inform sensitize and

educate Christians not to fear and delay but to lunch out to

every society within their reach, to fulfill the great

consideration John 4>35. This event took place at Samaria,

when Jesus met the Samarian woman at the well, after

spearing to her she weak and turn samararia for Christ.

1.1.5

The great compassion Matt. 9> 36, is also one of the ten great

commission charges Jesus gave for the church to fulfill. He has

compassion over the sheep having no shepherd. This command

of Jesus has been a land mark for church to pursue till he

comes. From (cims) ministerial studies hand book.

18
CHRISTIANITY

Christianity by matt slick is a religion besed upon the teachings

and miracles of Jesus. Jesus is the Christ. The word Christ

means anointed one from God the father who came to this

world, fulfilled the old testament laws and prophecies, died on

the cross, and rose from the dead physically. He performed

many miracles which were recorded in the gospels by the

eyewitnesses. He is divine in nature as well as human. This He

has two natures and is worthy of worship and praise.

Christianity teaches that there is only one God in all

existence, that God made the universe, the earth, and

created Adam and Eve. God created man in His image, this

does not mean that God has a body of flesh and bones.

Image means likeness of Gods character, rationality etc.

because we are made in the image of God every person is

worthy of respect and honor. Furthermore, this means that

we did not involve through random processes from a single-

celled organism into rational, emotional being.

19
Christianity teaches that God is a trinity (father, son and holy

spirit, not three Gods), that Jesus Christ is the second person

of the trinity, that Jesus died on the cross from the dead

physically, and that all people are under the righteous

judgment of God because all people have sinned against

God. It teaches that Jesus is the only way to be saved from

the coming judgement of God and that salvation is received

by faith in the work of Christ on the cross and not by

anything that we can do to plead God. Where all other

religions in the word teach that we must do some work of

good cooperation with God in other to achieve the right to be

in God presence. Christianity is the only religion that teaches

salvation by grace. This means that we are not made right

before God by our efforts, sincerity or works. Instead we are

made right before God by faith in what Christ did on the

cross.
Christianity further teaches that once a person is born

again he becomes saved, that the Holy Spirit lives in that

person and the person is changed. Therefore if any man is in

Christ, he is a new creature, the old things passed away.

20
Behold now things have come ( 2cor 5:17). This means that

God actually lives in the person and the Christian then

experiences a true and living relationship with God.

Therefore. what is Christianity is best an answered by

saying that it is a relationship with the true and living God

through the person of Jesus Christ by whom wear forgiven of

our sins and escape the righteous judgment of God.

1.2 Statement of the problem

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

27
2.0 INTRODUCTION

This chapter is crucial because it reviews the positive effect

of Christianity in the society within Port Harcourt city in Port

Harcourt local government area of rivers state and the

factor.

2.1 Theoretical frame work

Christianity mission in Africa were established by a variety of

Christian denominations. Many different Roman Catholic

orders established mission work in Africa, as did many

protestant denominations in fact; it would be difficult to

identify a protestant church in the early twentieth century

that did not have mission work in some part of Africa. The

primary goal of Christian missionaries was to convert as

many Africans to Christianity as possible. To carry on the this

mandate Jesus commissioned his apostles for the task in

(Acts 1:8) to facilitate meeting this goal apostles pastors,

missionaries concentrated their efforts on teaching and

preaching about Christianity, to reach the vast majority

societies of the people,

28
Missionaries had to learn their languages. To further interest

in and understanding of Christianity, missionaries worked to

translate portions of the bible into local languages.

Module seven B: History of Africa, in the 15 th century

European countries began to search for a new sea trade

route to Asia, Spain supported the European exploration of

Christopher cohibus who believed that by sending to the

west, Spain could develop new trading route to Asia, at the

same time, Portugal was sending route to down the west

coast of Africa to Asia.

Refer to map exploration to Africa as the Portuguese worked

their way around Africa, they established contact with

African peoples in the canary islands, cape Verde islands

along the guinea west, in equatorial Africa (kongo) Angola,

Mozambique and Kenya. In the Portuguese had a dual

agenda. First to establish trade secondly to spread the

Christian religion. In their attempt to covert people to

Christianity. In the same way they reached the southern part

29
of Nigeria. This strategy met with mixed success had yield.

Dividence of established Christian churches

2.2 Christianity

According to the 2011 global Christianity report produced by

pew research, the total population of Christianity in Nigeria is

currently eighty million, which makes Nigeria the country

with the largest Christian population in Africa. The same

report noted that there are move Christians in Nigeria than

in any Europe. The mumbers of Christians in Nigeria is the

country that brought Christianity to Nigeria. Nigeria had the

worlds second largest protestant population (second only to

the U.S.A). It is also ranks sixth in the global list of countries

with the largest number of Christians.

2.3 HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY

. According to Nelson .W. Aldrich house, headquarters of the

Rhode Island historical society is an organization dedicated

30
to preserving, collecting researching, and interpreting

historical information or items. Originally, these societies

were created as a way to help future generations understand

their reimage. Historical societies very in specialization with

focuses ranging turn specific geographical areas such as

countries or towns, universities, railways ethnic, and

religious groups, to genealogy, pioneer history and the

preservation of antiques or historic buildings. Often many of

these organizations ensure that historic architecture is

preserved/ restored and period houses are maintained for

tours open to the public.

It is said that historical societies originated in Western

Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries historical society,

which was founded in 1791 by leremy Belknap. He was

joined by nine others Bostonians who helped him create the

historical society, an organization truly devoted to collecting

materials for the study of American history.

In 19th century societies were becoming more and more

democratic in their membership policies, while large group of

31
people were still excluded. However, when the progressive

era came, those institutions with a capacity or obligation to

serve the public most importantly the influence of

Christianity in 20th and 21th century has caused societal

architectural and demographic changes.

2.4 ORIGIN OF CHRISTIANITY

The origin of Christianity was predicted by our lord Jesus

Christ in Joel 2:8. And afterward, I will pour my spirit on all

people, your sons and danghters will prophesy, your old men

will dream dreams, your young men will see vision (NIV).

In Matt 16: 18 Jesus said tell you that you are Peter, and on

this rock I will build my church and the gates of hides will not

overcome it (NIV).

The lord fulfilled this promised in Acts 2:1, and Christianity

begain to spring up on the day of Pentecost. The essence is

that the Holy Spirit comes down upon a member of people to

fetcher. They were conscious that the God has come down

and hes amongst them.

32
A baptism, an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, a visitation. And

the effect of that is that they immediately become aware of

his presence and of His power in a manner that they have

never known before.

According to the book of Acts, the apostolic age became so

radical in evangelism which turned many unbelievers to

become Christians and for the very first day (3,000) three

thousand people were converted on the day of Pentecost.

And added to the church. The leader of salvation ministry

Pastor David Ibiyeome in response to this challenge that fell

upon the apostles has made a great positive effect in

Christianity with his members in our society, of Port

-Harcourt local Government Area, of this age.

2.5 THE STRATEGY FOR THE EFFECT OF CHRISTIANITY

The following are remote because observed barriers by the

researcher

(1) Nigeria and Biafra (1966-19967_ civil war gave rise to

religions decadence.
33
(2) The closure of churches during the civil war
(3) Hunger and thirty caused people not to attend

churches.
(4) Failure to launch out for Evangelism
(5) Too much procrastination
(6) Fear for lack of money
(7) Self satisfaction which is against the great mission

commitment
(8) Failure to plan anything for church development
(9) Failure to engage on spiritual welfare
(10) No follow up and visitation of new members

2.6 THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF SALVATION

MINISTRY.

General Overseer of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David

Ibiyeomie is widely known as the Apostle of Prosperity and

good health. He runs a N10 billion ministry with over 30

branches. He is arguably the biggest and richest pastor from

the south-south part of the country.

HOW THE SALVATION MINISTRIES GET STARTED

Just as every great empire today had a little beginning so

also Salvation Ministries (Home of Success) had a little

34
beginning. Pastor David Ibiyeomie, having completed his

bible school training at Bishop Oyedepos Word of Faith Bible

Institute, started a house fellowship with his family at 1689B,

Buraimo Kenku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. He later

relocated to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, specifically G.R.A.,

Port Harcourt. Thus Salvation Ministries (Glorious Chapel)

Started on April 13, 1997, at Plot 35, Birabi Street, G.R.A.

Phase 1, Port Harcourt with a little over twenty (20) persons

in attendance including himself and his wife.

The Church, in July 1999, relocated from Plot 35, Birabi to

Plot 17, Birabi Street (the present place) in G.R.A Port

Harcourt, now reportedly worth over N1.5billion. As a result

of ever surging crowd, the worship centre which is now a

mega church would soon relocate to their new site with a

state of the art architectural masterpiece cathedral and hi-

tech facilities, at Igwuruta, along International Airport Road,

Port Harcourt. The capacity of the cathedral, according to the

ministry, is going to be amongst the largest in the world and

is penned at N5 billion alongside other facilities.

35
The ministry acclaimed one of the fastest growing churches

in Nigeria has blossomed into over 50,000 adult regular

worshippers at the headquarters alone aside its branches. By

reason of the teeming population, the church runs five

services every Sunday and two services on every Thursday

in all their satellite churches also.

As part of the divine vision received from God, David

Ibiyeomie runs a virile television outreach named Hour of

Salvation in several local stations which also cuts across the

nations of the world like Daystar Television (U.S.A), KICC

(London), God TV, Inspiration International (U.K), and Ben TV.

WJYS (Chicago), MCTV (Chicago), ACBN amongst others. His

television ministry is a multimillion naira project which gulps

over N100 million annually.

One of his money spinning projects is the Book Ministry.

David Ibiyeomie is a teacher and erudite writer with the sole

aim of imparting lives. He has authored the following books

The Power Of Vision, How To Come Out Of Debt, Walking In

Divine Health, Six Steps To Multiplication, Power In The Name

36
Of Jesus, Touch Of Excellence, See You At The Top, Wonder

Of Hs Grace, Recovering Your Inheritance, Power Of Small

Beginning, The Prosperous Family, Miracle Hands, Living

Without Financial Pressure, Releasing Your Destiny, Created

Pathway To Greatness, Succeeding With Challenges, Wisdom

For Healthy Living, Principles Of Covenant Wealth, The Price

For Power, How Faith Works, How To Hear From God, Keys To

Impactful Living, The Power Of Praise.

His books are like bible to his several followers which rakes

in several millions of naira. Aside that, he runs one of the

most vibrant bible schools called Word of Life Bible Institute

(WOLBI). It is a non denominational institute where the

word of God is taught to equip Christians with the knowledge

to handle issues of life with result. The school runs three (3)

different programmes Basic Certificate Course, Advanced

Certificate Course, and Diploma Certificate Course. Several

people have passed through this institute.

37
Pastor David Ibiyeomies central message focuses on

prosperity, all round success and good health of all believers.

It is reported that he runs a multimillion naira philanthropic

ministry where he empowers the poor, widows, orphans,

offers scholarship to indigents and housing for pastors. All

his pastors (over 40) drive the same brand of jeep he drives

and owned houses. It is claimed that Pastor Ibiyeomie proved

that you dont just need to be in government or be a

politician or businessman to be wealthy and assist others,

especially those in need.

David Ibiyeomie was born in Bonny Island on October 21,

1962. Even though he was born in Bonny, his late parents

were indigenes of Bolo Town in Ogu/Bolo Local Government

Area of Rivers state.

He attended Banham Primary School, Port Harcourt, from

1969 to 1974 for his primary education; Government

his divine calling in 1995. He was mentored by Bishop David

Oyedepo. He attended full time Bible School at the Word of

Faith Bible Institute, an arm of Pastor David Oyedepos

ministries in 1996. In the course of his training, he was

greatly influenced by Bishop Oyedepos standards.

David Ibiyeomie is joyfully married to Peace Ibiyeomie, who

is also a pastor by calling and they are blessed with a son,

David.
