SICKNESS AND HEALTH

On this chapter you will find a lot of different activities. They are all about accidents, illness and first aid.
You will find most of the answers in the pages that follow. These pages contain information about:
- Accidents - heart disease
- How diseases spread - cancer
- Fighting diseases - first aid
- Smoking

ACTIVITIES
1. What would you do?
a. You are playing hockey when a friend gets a stick in her eye and starts bleeding badly
b. You are playing football when a friend is tackled, falls and cannot stand up.
c. You find a two-year-old child with an open bottle of bleach beside her
d. Your mother spills boiling water on her arm and then collapses on the floor
e. Your younger brother is unconscious on the floor. He is holding an electric kettle
connected to the mains
f. You disturb a nest of wasps and get badly stung
g. What can you do to help someone who is ill in bed with a high temperature?

2. With your friends, make an anti-smoking or anti-alcohol or anti-sneezing poster

3. Prepare a short talk or tape for your class about accidents. Choose one place where accidents may
happen, like the kitchen or a place out doors. Find out information about what goes wrong and when it
goes wrong. Say what should be done to stop accidents in that place.
4. Make a map of the roads around your house or school. Mark on all the danger sports, and say why
they are dangerous. Write a list of ideas which would make the area safer
5. Find out about smallpox: what it is and how it has been controlled. You will need to use a library to do
this.
6. Choose one disease (either from the rest of this unit, or one you can find out about). Make a pamphlet
(to go in a doctors surgery) about the disease. You should say what cause it, what it does to you and
how it can be cured or prevented. What photos or drawings should go in the pamphlet?
7. Ask older people what illness were common before about 1960. Which ones are still common? Find
out why some illness have nearly disappeared.
8. Design a poster that shows someone who has a high risk of heart disease, and someone who has a low
risk.
9. Get permission to study the graves in a graveyard. Find out if people who lived long ago died at a
younger than modern people
10. Most factories have to do a safety audit every year. This means checking the entire factory for
dangers and doing something about them
11. Write a story about this newspaper headline: Manned Mars probe returns with killer illness
EXTRAS
Do a survey to find out what illness each person in your class has had. Draw a chart to show your results
clearly. Choose one of these:
a pie chart
a bar chart
a line graph

FIRST AID

Imagine the scene you are walking to a friends house when a man cycles past you. He swerves to avoid a
car that pulls out, and he crashes into telephone box. He is bleeding and seems to be badly injured. What
would you do first?

Before you read on, write down what you would do.
1. Get someone to telephone for an ambulance.
2. Do not move the man if he is unconscious, or if he has any pain in his back.
3. Is he breathing? Listen for breaths at the mans mouth. At the same time, look if his chest is moving
(A). If he is not breathing, check that nothing is blocking his mouth (like false teeth) (B). Tilt his head
back: this opens the airway to the lungs, and moves the tongue away (C). Now you can give him
mouth-to-mouth ventilation (D, E).
4. Is his heart beating? Mouth-to-mouth ventilation is no good if the persons blood is not flowing. After
a few ventilation, check the mans heartbeat (F).
If there is any pulse (G), carry on with the ventilation. If there is no pulse, listen on his chest for
a heartbeat (H). If the heart has stopped, press down on it hard (I). This pushes blood into the arteries.
Do five slow pushes, down and up. Then give another mouth-to mouth ventilation. Check the pulse
again and repeat the chest presses if there is no pulse. Continue this sequence until help arrives.
5. Is the man bleeding? If there is a lot of blood, press a pad on the wound, or push the sides of a cut
together. If possible, raise the injured part and support it.
6. If there may be a broken bone or back injury, do not move the man. Serious damage can be done by
moving an injured person. Otherwise, put him in the recovery position. Keep him warm until help
arrives. Do not give him anything to eat or drink.

Some Minor Injuries

Bruises
Raise the injured part. Put cold water or ice in a plastic bag on the injury. Keep the rest of the persons
body warm.
Burns
Cool the burn under cold water for at least ten minutes. Take away any clothing covering the burn. If the
burn seems bad, get help. If the burn is not serious, cover it with a plain dressing. Do not use a plaster or
cotton wool.
Cuts
Wash your hands. Wash any dirt or bits out of the cut with clean soap and water. Dry it, and put a dressing
or plaster on. bigger cuts may need stitching.
Fainting
If the person is conscious, get them to sit with their head between their knees. Loosen any tight clothing. If
the person is unconscious, treat her or him like the person in the accident above.
Sprains
Get the person to lie down. Raise the injured part and support it. Put cold water or ice in a bag on the
injury for at least ten minutes. Then bandage the injury. If there is a lot of pain or swelling, the person
should have an X-ray.

You can learn a lot of more about how to deal with injures if you do a first-aid course.

Getting Accident
Do not move, if there may be a broken bone or back injury
Get someone to telephone for Ambulance
Check or listen his/ her breath
Check, if there is a bleeding
Take him/ her to a safe place
Give him/ her Mouth-to-mouth ventilation
