Hostnames restrictions:

Domain names consists of series of labels concatenated with dots. Eg."en.wikiped

Each label must be between 1 and 63 characters long.
FQDN cannot exceed 255 characters.
Domain name labels may contain only the ASCII letters 'a' through 'z' (in a case
-insensitive manner),
the digits '0' through '9', and the hyphen ('-').
Domain name labels can start with digits. No other symbols, punctuation characte
rs, or white space are
permitted.
The hostname en.wikipedia.org is composed of the DNS labels
en (hostname or leaf domain),
wikipedia (second-level domain) and
org (top-level domain).
Labels such as 2600 and 3abc may be used in hostnames, but -hi-,_hi_ and *hi* ar
e invalid.
A summary of sample guidelines for good host names:
Use words/names that are rarely used.
Use real words.

And some sample guidelines for not so good host names:


Don't use your own name.
Don't use long names.
Avoid domain-like names.
Don't use digits at the beginning of the name.
Don't use non-alphanumeric characters in a name.
