vi Prinergy Workflow System Release Notes for Europe, Africa, and Middle East Regions
1 Overview

These release notes describe the changes in the Kodak Prinergy 5.3
software.
Where applicable, the release notes refer you to the Prinergy
documentation for more information.

Licensing
Prinergy 5.3 is available to all Prinergy 5.x customers as a free upgrade.
A Prinergy 5.3 license key is required in order to upgrade your Prinergy
workflow system to Prinergy 5.3. You can obtain the license key
yourself using the new Kodak Product Registration and License
Activation System (PLAS). For access, go to https://
ecentral.kodak.com/productregistration/.
Note: Prinergy 5.3 supports the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 operating
system and the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 operating system. If you are
running Prinergy 4.x on Microsoft Windows 2000, or if any of your render stations
are running Microsoft Windows XP, and you want to upgrade to Prinergy 5.3, you
must upgrade the operating system on each of your Prinergy servers to Windows
Server 2003 R2 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 x64, in addition to upgrading your
Prinergy software. The operating system upgrade is not included in your Prinergy
5.3 upgrade. To discuss your upgrade options, contact your Kodak representative.

Kodak recommends for all customers to upgrade to Windows 2008

x64 as this operating system is planned to be the mandatory minimum
version for the next major update of Prinergy. Extended support from
Microsoft for Windows 2003 will end in July of 2015 and therefore
cannot be covered by Kodak past this date.

You must use the Prinergy Update Utility (PUpdate.exe) to install

the upgrade. You can download the latest Prinergy software from
Partner Place at https://partnerplace.kodak.com/.
4 Chapter 2Hardware and software requirements

Note: Before beginning the upgrade, ensure that you use the PreCheck.exe tool
to check for potential conflicts. The Precheck software performs a number of
internal checks, including checking the system to ensure that the minimum
required software version of Prinergy is running, that the Oracle database has
been backed up within the last 24 hours, and that there is adequate disk space for
the upgrade. You can download the Precheck software from Partner Place.

If you need assistance while upgrading your Prinergy system, contact a

service representative in Europe at 0032.2.352.30.90, or find your
local support center at http://graphics.kodak.com/.

Supported workstations and servers

Prinergy workstations and servers must meet specific hardware and
software requirements.

Workstations and servers

Prinergy 5.3 workstations and servers can run Windows Server
2003R2 SP2 or Windows Server 2008 x64, depending on the Dell
workstation or server model.
See the following table for information about which operating systems
are available for each server model that Prinergy 5.3 supports.
For Windows Server 2003, the original release of the operating system
is not supported; only R2 SP2 is supported. For Windows Server 2008,
only x64 is supported; x32 is not supported. Note also that Windows
Server 2008 x64 is qualified only for some servers that are directly
connected to an output device via the Kodak Xpo or Kodak Print
Console software. Consult with your Kodak representative for a current
list of supported output devices.
Prinergy 5.3 supports mixed operating system environments. You can
run multiple servers with the Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 and
Windows Server 2008 x64 R1operating systems in one configuration.
The operating system that is shipped with a new Prinergy 5.3
workstation or server depends on requirements such as the server
model and the output devices to which the server will be connected.
Refer to your sales team when purchasing a new server.
Operating system upgrades are not included in the Prinergy 5.3
upgrade and must be performed by Kodak personnel. Contact your
Kodak representative to schedule your operating system upgrade.
If you are planning to install Prinergy on Windows Server 2008, you
first need to install Windows hot fix kb973278. This hot fix is available
from Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973278/.
Prinergy 5.3 supports the following workstations and servers:
Supported workstations and servers 5

Workstation/server Windows Server 2003 Windows Server 2008

R2 SP2 x64 R1 and R2
Performance Dell servers:
PE800, PE830, PE840 Yes No
PE T310 Yes Yes
Premium Dell servers:
PE2800, PE2850 Yes No
PE2900*, PE2950*, Yes Yes*
PE2900 Gen3, PE2950
Gen 3, PE T610, PE
R710

* For PE2900 and PE2950, Windows 2008 is supported on secondary

or third-party render stations. Only Windows 2008 R2 is qualified for
render stations requiring direct device connectivity.
Performance Plus Dell servers are qualified for use as Prinergy primary
servers with Windows 2003 only.
Performance servers contain a single hard disk drive, while
Performance Plus servers contain mirrored system drives and RAID 1
storage.

Memory requirements
Prinergy has the following memory requirements.

Workstation/server Windows Server 2003 Windows Server 2008

R2 SP2 x64 R1 and R2
Primary server 4 GB 8 GB minimum; 12 GB
recommended
Secondary server 4 GB 8 GB minimum; 12 GB
recommended
Render station 2 GB (4 GB 8 GB minimum; 12 GB
recommended for recommended
optimum performance)

Storage requirements
A 73 GB or larger system drive is required for this upgrade. Prinergy
primary servers with large databases may require larger disks, since
the amount of free disk space needed on your system depends on the
size of your database and the configuration of your system.
Before you start the Prinergy 5.3 upgrade, run the PreCheck.exe
utility that is included in the upgrade package on the primary server to
determine whether sufficient free space is available.
6 Chapter 2Hardware and software requirements

Archive media
Since the 5.0 release, Prinergy has not supported the DLT format
single-tape devices and tape libraries as archive media.
Due to technology changes, the latest generations of Prinergy-
supported servers are no longer compatible with the SCSI cards that
are required to drive the DLT tape devices. Windows Server 2003 R2
SP2 drivers for DLT devices are also difficult to source for those servers
that are still compatible.
Note: Windows 2008 x64 does not support archiving to tape. If you want to
continue archiving to tape, you must keep a Prinergy workflow server running
Windows 2003 with the tape device connected to that server.

Currently, Kodak supports the following tape technologies:

LT04400 GB
AIT250 GB
AIT3100 GB

To help you with moving your data to supported media, Kodak

provides the following tools:
Prinergy Tape Retrieval Software

The Prinergy Tape Retrieval (PTR) software configuration is

used for a stand-alone Prinergy server that is only used to
retrieve jobs from tape.
This Prinergy server remains on an older version of Prinergy and
retrieves jobs from old archive media piecemeal as reprints are
required. The job is then exported to the main plating Prinergy
system for reprint purposes. This enables you to retrieve from
archive media that is no longer supported in newer versions of
Prinergy, while still taking advantage of the benefits of the
newer software for your main production workflow. For more
information, see the Prinergy Tape Retrieval Software User Guide.
Medium Logical Copy
This tool is delivered with your Prinergy system as part of the
Media Manager. You can use it to move the content of one tape
to another tape or to make a copy of a tape. For more
information about how to use this tool, see the Prinergy user
guide.
Tape Dump
This script lists all of your jobs that are archived on media, with
the tape they are archived to, and the date that they were
archived. The list can be ordered by job or by tape name. This
list allows you to select and convert only those tapes that have
relevant content and bypass tapes that have no relevant
Supported client workstations 7

content. This script can be downloaded from Partner Place at

https://partnerplace.kodak.com/.
Archive to Disk
This functionality, available since Prinergy 5.0, archives a job to
a single file (MTF format that is also readable by Microsoft
Backup) that contains all job elements, identical to what is
saved to tape. Prinergy can retrieve from that file as long as the
file is located at the same place as where it was archived. If you
want to use this new functionality as a replacement for your
DLT media, you must retrieve the required jobs from the DLT
media before upgrading to Prinergy 5.3. You may require extra
storage space to hold the content of those tapes during the
migration. If you do not have the storage space available in your
current configuration, you can contact your service
representative to discuss the various options for adding space.

Supported client workstations

Your client computers should meet the minimum hardware and
software recommendations before you connect them to the Prinergy
primary server. The recommendations for your computers may vary,
depending on the number of software applications that are installed on
the client computers and on the configuration of your Prinergy system.
Note: The recommendations listed have been tested and found to work. If
Workshop fails to install properly on client computers, ensure that the computers
meet the minimum recommendations.

If you need help with determining your client computer hardware

requirements, contact your sales representative.

3 New features

This section lists features that were added or improved in the Prinergy
software.

Online Print Solutions (OPS) integration with Prinergy

Online Print Solutions (OPS) integration with Prinergy enables
automatic processing of print orders received from an OPS website.
Variable data and static data print jobs are created and processed in
Prinergy using Rules Based Automation (RBA). Prinergy can post the
status of the print job back to the OPS website to let the print buyer
know when the job has been printed and shipped.
Prinergy 5.3 contains the components required to establish connectivity
to OPS. A license key and Kodak remote installation services are
required in order to enable the feature for new customers. Please
contact your local sales representative for further details.
Note: Customers who have previously purchased this feature via Kodak custom
development will receive the required license automatically when upgrading to
Prinergy 5.3.

Prerequisites for OPS connectivity include an OPS instance set up with

at least one website and an initial product, an RBA license for Prinergy,
and experience in creating and debugging RBA rule sets.

Datamatrix mark supports custom fields

The datamatrix mark has been updated to support custom fields. The
syntax is $[DataMatrixSurface_CustomFieldName_##],
where ## is the optional size for the mark in points. If not specified, the
size will default to the text size. "CustomFieldName" is the name of
the surface level custom field.

Complex job RIP mode

Prinergy 5.3 features a new check box Complex job mode (use with
caution) in the Render pane of output process templates. This option
can be used for processing complex jobs that would otherwise fail
during the RIP process, such as map jobs or PDF files with very high
resolution bitmaps. This option requires Windows 2008 with the
recommended amount of RAM. This option should not be used for
normal jobs that can be RIPed successfully without it, because RIPing
with this option may take longer to process. RIPing complex jobs with
this option may take many hours to process although the jobs will
succeed in outputting. This option has had limited testing, so caution is
16 Chapter 3New features

urged when using it. This option only works with Adobe PDF Print
Engine output.

Register JTP pooling

Prinergy 5.3 enables you to add multiple Register JTPs to Prinergy on
the server of your choice via Administrator, and pool them together.
This can be helpful for high-volume sites where Register JTP is
sometimes a bottleneck. If your primary server is heavily loaded, you
can configure these JTPs to run on a secondary server.
The additional Register JTPs are licensed based on Normalize licenses;
each Normalize license enables an additional Register JTP license when
upgrading to Prinergy version 5.3

Support for Altona Test Suite 2.0

Prinergy 5.3 has a minor fix that allows it to process the Altona Test
Suite 2.0 successfully. See Using the Altona Test Suite 2.0 in this Release
Notes for details about using the suite and for running the test.
Background information on the Altona Test Suite can be found at
http://www.eci.org/en/downloads#altona_test_suite.

b. Clear the Do Separations check box.
c. Set Spot Color Handling to Convert to Process.
d. Select the Always use Color-Combiner to Convert Spots check
box.
Note: Spot colors will automatically convert to process colors.
15. Output the file.
You can view the results in TIFF Assembler Plus or, output the
refined PDF file to an ink jet proofer or, output the refined PDF file
to a halftone proofer. For example, output to a Spectrum device.
Assuming that the halftone donor materials match the press inks
colorimetrically, color matching and overprint handling is not
requiredsimply output to a halftone proofer as you normally
would. If the donors are different and you want to use color
matching, in the Match Colors area of the output process template,
in the Method list, select Vector.
5 Known problems

This section lists problems that are known to exist in the software. For
more information, see also the latest Prinergy Readme file.

Windows Server 2008 x64 operating system

The following limitations have been identified for running Prinergy using
the Windows Server 2008 x64 operating system:
Prinergy supports only the 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008.
32-bit Windows Server 2008 is not supported.
Only a few CtP devices have a Win2008 compatible Xpo version.
Therefore when upgrading a Prinergy system that is directly
connected to a CtP device, to Win2008, make sure that this CtP
device has a Win2008 compatible Xpo version. Otherwise, keep this
Prinergy system on Win2003. Please contact your Kodak
representative to find out if your CtP device has a Win2008
compatible Xpo version.
Services for Apple Macintosh does not work with Windows Server
2008. You must use SMB with AppleDouble, SMB with named forks,
or ExtremeZ-IP instead.
Insite Prepress Portal version 6.5 or earlier does not support
Windows Server 2008 and cannot be installed on the Prinergy
Primary server if it is running Windows 2008. (Note: Running both
Insite and Prinergy on the same server is not recommended).
If the Archiver JTP is connected to any tape device, it cannot be run
on Windows Server 2008. If you are using only the Archive to Disk
function, the Archiver JTP can be run on Windows 2008. You can
still use the Archiver JTP when it is connected to a tape device,
provided that you are using Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2. You can
only run one Archiver JTP on your complete system.
Hot Standby requires both platforms to be on the same operating
system and Release (R) number. (Example: Windows Server 2008
R2).

Network File System connectivity

Prinergy 5.3 does not support Network File System (NFS) (UNIX)
connectivity for servers running Windows 2008. UNIX clients will be
unable to access files and shares hosted on Prinergy servers running
Windows Server 2008.
If any of your Prinergy servers are running Windows Server 2008, to
provide UNIX connectivity, use SMB protocol instead. Files that are
needed by a UNIX client must be pushed from the Prinergy server to a
20 Chapter 5Known problems

UNIX server that is configured with SMB/CIFS protocol (such as

SAMBA).
If you want to continue to use NFS connectivity, your Prinergy servers
must continue to run Windows Server 2003.

Integration with ColorFlow

The following limitations have been identified for using ColorFlow
software with Prinergy:
Imposed output fails with certain jobs when the Job Color Setup and
Process Template Color Setup are different and Calibrate Marks is
selected in the process template. This happens even though Allow
undefined color setup and color setup mismatch is selected. The
process fails because the Calibration Curve is requested from the
device condition in the Job Color Setup, where it does not exist.
The problem has been found to occur when the page assignments
on the imposed surface include one of the following:
Unassigned (blank) pages
Pages with a tagged color setup and pages with an undefined
color setup
Pages tagged with different color setups

Workaround: Modify the Job Color Setup so that it is the same as

the Process Template Color Setup. [PRINERGY-30922]
The Dieline separation automatically maps to color bar spot color if
ColorFlow is enabled in the Edit Job Attributes dialog box when the
job is created. This happens even though the dieline color is defined
in the color library.
Workaround: Enable ColorFlow in the job attributes after the job
has been created. [PRINERGY-30973]
The Approved Snapshot ID cannot be identified in the RBA Set Job
Color Setup action parameters. The Approved Snapshot must be
selected by its ID number in the parameter's drop down list.
[PRINERGY-29670]
The RBA Create Job Action does not include a parameter for the
Color Setup selection in the Template Job Options dialog box.
[PRINERGY-30663]
The ColorFlow input device conditions are not shown as they were
originally configured in refine process templates when they are
reopened. If changes are made to any of the process template
settings, the ColorFlow input device conditions must also be
reconfigured before saving the template, otherwise the color
conversions settings shown will be applied instead of the original
settings. [PRINERGY-32172]
Pages added to a ColorFlow enabled job using Prinergy's Bypass
Refine will have undefined Color Setup. This is expected behavior.
21

Refining with ColorConvert enabled is recommended with

ColorFlow integration.
If you attempt to output a file with a different snapshot number
from the number you defined in the refine process template, an
error message appears.
Support for packaging requirements is limited in ColorFlow 1.2.6.3.
ColorFlow cannot generate Flexo bump curves. Custom spot curves
can be configured in the device condition and may be viewed and
edited, but cannot be calculated based on spot ink response.

ColorConvert
The following ColorConvert problems have been identified:
Color matching certain files with transparent objects can result in
significant changes in appearance. The problem is file specific and is
dependent on the transparency blending modes applied, the
object's color and the DeviceLink or ICC profile used to color
convert the objects. The problem occurs because each graphic and
image object used in the transparency group is color converted
separately. Blending of the objects in the destination color space
changes the appearance.
Workaround: Flatten the PDF files. Contone proofing cannot be
used to predict this issue when color-matching is performed on final
output. [PRINERGY-29950]
ColorMatch vector overprint handling of certain files with
transparency groups that also use overprint management can
generate unexpected results. The new objects generated by the
ColorMatcher vector overprint handling process end up ruining the
appearance. Contone proofing with raster overprint handling cannot
be used to predict the problem with vector overprint handling used
on final output. See the Prinergy help for detailed descriptions about
the processing differences between raster and vector overprint
handling. [PRINERGY-29131]
Indexed color objects in certain files do not ColorMatch correctly.
The problem has been found to frequently occur when converting
indexed color objects to Devicegray color space.
[PRINERGY-28897]
Profile pair RGB-to-CMYK color conversions using a version 2 ICC
source profile and a version 4 ICC destination profile results in a
contaminated white point. The problem most frequently occurs with
ColorFlow integration because version 4 device profiles are
generated by ColorFlow by default.
Workaround: Change the ColorFlow preferences to generate
version 2 compatible profiles.
22 Chapter 5Known problems

Knockouts in legacy versioning jobs

During final output for a legacy versioning job, if the version input file
contains spot elements with 0% spot tint and these are placed over
color elements in the input base file, they may incorrectly knock out
underlying colors when the spot color is converted to process.
The Color Combiner cannot be enabled on final output, so it is
recommended to make Prinergy Virtual Proofing System software
(VPS) proofs using a final output process template to ensure that the
VPS proof matches the plate output. If unwanted knockouts appear in
the VPS proofs, consider the following solutions:
If the 0% tint spot elements are not required for the final output,
consider removing them from the file before outputting it to a plate.
Otherwise, use an imposed proof process template to output to a
TIFF file. Create the plates from the TIFF file and expose them using
TIFF Downloader.

Adobe PDF Print Engine limitations

The Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) RIP cannot process PDF files
containing embedded PostScript objects, including pages that were
processed with PostScript bypass or with the OPI bypass features of
Prinergy.
The APPE RIP is the preferred RIP for Prinergy.
Observe the following precautions:
Proofs and plates: In plating jobs with the APPE RIP, be careful with
plates that were proofed with the previous APPE RIP. Because the
RIPs are different, there is a slight chance of an interpretation
difference between proof and plate. Ideally, jobs should be plated
with the same version of Prinergy that was used to generate the
proofs.
Note: To avoid this situation you should coordinate hub and spoke
configurations when upgrading Prinergy.

Reprints: For reprints of jobs that were printed previously using an

older RIP, it is recommended that you rerun proofs using the new
RIP to ensure there are no unforeseen differences between the
original press run and the reprint.

Print queue parameter is lost in RBA rules that include the

Create Document action (PR: BMCD-1307)
Rules-Based Automation (RBA) rules that include the Create
Document action may require that the print queue name be
respecified.
23

Rules that include the Create Document action will initially work after
upgrading to Prinergy 5.2. However, if you open the rule for editing, the
Digital Print Queue parameter gets marked as invalid.
You can avoid this problem by not editing the rule unless necessary, or
you can fix the problem by respecifying the Digital Print Queue
parameter in the rule.

Maxtone NX RIP limitations

Kodak Maxtone NX is available for the APPE RIP only. It does not work
with the CPSI RIP.

Register of a versioned page fails after the page has been

opened in Acrobat on a Mac (PRINERGY-29349)
If you open an LPV page in Acrobat and then re-generate it, the
Register step will fail with an access violation message. This only
happens when dealing with Windows 2008 servers and if the PDF has
been opened on a Mac.
Workaround: Unmount the Mac share.

Auto Select in Prinergy Signature Selection

The use of Auto Select in Prinergy Signature Selection may produce
different results from the use of Auto Select in Preps. Check that Auto
Select produces the expected results.
If required, you can use Move Up or Move Down to adjust the
signature order, or use Add or Delete to get the right signature.
To prevent the problem, edit the PrepsPrinergy.cfg and the
PrepsPrinergy.cfg.template files to include the line:
AUTOSELECT_MINIMUM_PAGES:1.

Signature Selection limitations

Prinergy Signature Selection works in Preps 5 mode. Therefore, there
are a number of limitations related to working with Preps 6.
Editing impositions:
It is not possible to edit come-and-go, cut-and-stack, and multi-
binding style jobs with Signature Selection. If you try to edit an
imposition that uses any of these styles, the Use Prinergy Signature
Selection option will not be available in the Edit Imposition dialog
box. Instead, you will be able to select Use External Imposition
Application to start Preps 6.
If you create a come-and-go or cut-and-stack imposition using
Signature Selection, and then edit the imposition using Preps 6, a
24 Chapter 5Known problems

warning message appears, indicating that the job was produced in

an earlier version of Preps. You can ignore this message.

Importing impositions:
Signature Selection does not support import of Preps 6 jobs with
come-and-go or cut-and-stack binding styles. When creating a new
imposition, if you select Use existing Preps job and select a Preps 6
job with a come-and-go or cut-and-stack binding style, an error
message appears. You have the choice of selecting a different job
file or using external imposition software to create the imposition.

Creating impositions:
When you create a new imposition, the available come-and-go or
cut-and-stack binding styles are in Preps 5 mode only.
Preps 5 and 6 differ in the way that they display cut-and-stack and
come-and-go jobs. In Preps 6, cut-and-stack jobs are shown as
multiple webs, and come-and-go jobs are shown as multiple
sections. In Prinergy Workshop, such jobs are displayed in the Preps
6 format, while in Signature Selection, they are displayed in the
Preps 5 format. This is just a difference in display: the page
assignment is correct and the imposition will print correctly.

Custom screen sets limitations (PRINERGY-26172)

Custom screen sets are no longer visible in output process templates,
and output from existing process templates that uses custom screen
sets will fail. The reason for this is that the Creo_SCDV.cfg file,
which contains custom screen set information, is being replaced with a
sample file by the Prinergy installer. This will be corrected in future
versions.
To fix this problem, follow these steps:
1. Retrieve the original Creo_SCDV.cfg file from the uninstall
backup folder and copy it back to the proper location.
2. Locate the uninstall folder and find the original Creo_SCDV.cfg
file. The uninstall folder is located at (for example): D:\Prinergy
\CreoAraxi\support\patches\installed_Prinergy
\[4.1.2.6]\uninstall\D\Prinergy\AdobeExtreme
\bin\CreoScreens\Config\.
3. Copy the original Creo_SCDV.cfg file and replace the new .cfg
file that was installed at D:\Prinergy\AdobeExtreme\bin
\CreoScreens\Config\ with the copied file.
4. Stop and start all Printer JTPs. Your custom screen sets will now be
available for use.
25

Business Link imports parts into separate products

When a product with multiple parts is imported into Prinergy via
Business Link, these parts are imported into separate products. This
will be fixed in a future version.
