The purpose of this exercise is to give students experience in remember, understand
filming scenes from multiple perspectives and angles, and editing collaborate, communicate
these vantage shots together so that the action flows, uninterrupted,
analyze, synthesize

Discuss how the camera acts as the eyes for the viewer. create, publish
citizenship
Explain how, with conscientious filming and editing, the camera
can move around the action of a scene in order to allow the viewer
to see what needs to be seen in order to better understand what is
happening and create the overall mood.
Camera movement and shots also help keep the viewer interested.
Review viewpoints of narration as it is used in storytelling. Ie. First
person, second person, third person.
Point of View Notes

Brain storm as to how the camera can create these viewpoints.

Do a demonstration of a situation, ie opening a door and walking
through, while discussing camera position in relation to desired
viewpoint.
Review the different shots that have been practiced to date.
Show screen cast illustrating the steps and process involved in
filming a simple action from 3(minimal) different vantage points,
then editing the footage using pieces of each, to create a video
where the camera moves but the action happens only once.

Vantage Point Exercise Tutorial

Student Vantage Exercise Examples

Explain the importance of paying attention to detail when splicing

the film clips together. Ie. Which hand opens the door, how open is
the door.

Vantage Exercise Student Sheet

Exercise: Work in groups of 2 or 3

Each student creates their own video based on one of the following
options:
1. Person walking through doorway.
2. Person picking up an object.
3. Person encountering another person.
4. Person writing a note.
5. Own choice or variation. Must be approved by teacher.
Note: Each person in group must choose a different option from
list.
Using only one camera, shoot a simple action in its entirety, from 3
(minimal) different vantage points.
Edit the clips together using some of each film, so that the action
appears to only happen once while the camera appears to move.
Make sure that you include all the original raw footage at the end
of exercise. Create a title for the video, and include credits at the
end to recognize participants.

Lesson Wrap Up: See above

Differentiation/Modification/Enrichment:
Students are encouraged to challenge themselves with more complex and original solutions.

Teacher spends time with individuals and groups as needed to discuss ideas and approaches.

Students help each other.

Teacher helps students with limiting challenges to brainstorm realistic and/or alternative
solutions that will still meet the set objectives.

Teacher spends one on one time with students who need extra help, paying careful attention to
give full control of project decisions to the student.

Assistance will be arranged to help set up such things as tripods, and camera as needed. Assistance
can also be given in helping students choose best editing tools and programs suited to their
individual needs. Ie ipad vs camera, i-movie vs moviemaker, mouse vs tablet.

Assessment: Rubrics and checklists

This project will be evaluated on the following criteria

Editing- Continuity 3
- Clarity of action 3
- Appropriateness of video and audio 2
- Originality 1
- Use of time 5
